Popular Post Scrappile
I have four projects in progress right now, and I work on which ever one fits my mood of the day. Just having fun and doing nothing serious... Here is the one I have been working on today. It is a modification of an @alexfox pattern... Layered bird house pattern for a wall hanging,,, I thought it would make a cute real bird house.... This is my progress so far... The front of the bird house is Alex's pattern them I just have been building the house and this will be the front... I'm having a great time with it... I have to paint it now them glue the front together and attach it to the little house.. That is really nice. What did you have to shell out for the pattern? Scrappile

FrankEV
Great idea and beautiful work on both the scroll work and bird house. Of course you aren't going to let any real birds use it...right? If you are going to use it as a real BH, make sure the bottom is a hinged trap door so it can be cleaned out and you need to provide a dowel on the front for a pearch. And dont forget to finish it with a non toxic finish that will stand up to the weather. A while back I made 8 bird houses (no scroll work) for my DIL with different size holes for different kinds of birds. I used untreated cedar so I did not have to worry about a finish. I had done a lot of research on what bird houses need to have. OCtoolguy

I have studied about bird houses... the hole size is not correct of the smaller birds, but I have never seen a bird with a tape measure checking... I could easily put dowel in and may,, but, if not the correct size hole, no bird will use it and no cleaning necessary, the bottom I plan on attaching with screws for cleaning,,, I am member of the Audubon Society... but this is probably never going to be hung in a tree. dgman
That looks great Paul and a great idea! How big is the hole? It might make a good clock if the hole can be adjusted to 1 3/8” to fit a clock fit up. OCtoolguy and Scrappile 1

savethebeer
Very nice work with those bird houses. I've two plain old bird houses on the front of my house and I've had 2 broods of Coal Tits a year {about 7 to 9 eggs each time} for many years. Coal Tits will not use a nest box with a perch on the front, other breeds wont use a nest box unless there is a perch so adjust the box to try and attract the audience your interested in. My second bird house does not get a resident each year because the Coal Tits get territorial after they move in and chase off anyone who looks like they might move into the neighborhood, and its ten times worse if that new interloper is another Coal Tit. Its only used by occasional visitors who need an escape from bad weather for the night. OCtoolguy and Scrappile

Scrappile
I'm done,,, no more painting,,,, enough it enough... I will put a spray clear finish on it just for some protection. This would not hold up as an outdoor birdhouse..It is not the correct paint for it,,, maybe would work in a well protected location... But,,,, well ,,, it was fun. Edited March 2, 2021 by Scrappile OCtoolguy
