NormP
I am a new to scroll sawing and have question. Hope this is the correct place to ask. When I cut a pattern and it shows it mounted on a painted backer board can I just glue it on the backer board. I would think the glue would not bond to the backer board. Gluing and painting after would be a mess. Please tell me how to properly mount to the backer board. Thank you for any advice. crupiea

WayneMahler
First off, welcome to the addiction, if your not already you will be. It's a great place to be too. You can safely paint your backer board. Then glue the art work on top of it. I do the same when I am using felt for a backer and have not had any issues. Just be careful with the glue and squeeze out some can be a real pain to clean up. Feel free to ask any questions, there a lot of great folks here willing to help. Dave Monk
I like to use Weldbond. I had a failure once with Titebond so I changed. It also dries clear if you have squeeze out. WelcomeI
Dan
Welcome to The Village, Norm. I use picture frame matboards. I think I got them at Hobby Lobby and they are reasonably priced. They have a large assortment of colors, but easily with a utility knife, don't fade, and accept glue quite well. Probably cheaper than wood and no painting. ben2008
Welcome aboard Norm. I glue the painted backer on all the time. I typically use 1/16" Baltic Birch for a backer. Then I use "Aleene's Original Tacky Glue" to apply it and have never had a problem' Just use enough to hold the backer and try to eliminate too much squeeze out. I also use small spring clamps to get a nice tight fit. Good luck with your projects Ben Edited March 11, 2021 by ben2008 danny and Dave Monk

I use a tooth pick to apply in the very small areas and direct from the nozzle for larger areas. It’s best to clean up any squeeze out before it dries. It does dry clear, but will show if it’s a lot. I use a clean tooth pick to clean up any squeeze out. ben2008
Dennisfm56
Greetings from Lawrence, MA. I too use colored Mat board as a backer. Michaels in Salem NH had a decent selection last time I was there. Hobby Lobby in Manchester has more, but driving to Manchester can be a pain. teachnlearn
If you use a gloss paint on the backer board, it might be 'slick', just knock the gloss down with a little sand paper. A light sanding of any paint is going to 'scratch' it and give any glue places to grip. Since its background color, there is little chance anyone is going to see the lightly sanded paint. crupiea
I paint the backers if it is going to show, either that or stain. I use spray paint. A lot of it too, at least 3 thick coats. never had an issue with the pieces sticking. When i glue it on, I use a little brush and carefully apply the glue to the back side of the piece. Once you put it together there might be a little oozing out so i always clean that up right away with another tiny wet brush. You can use clear glue too which of course is less visable. Sticks just fine.

NC Scroller
I have had the best luck attaching the backers when I used flat or eggshell finish paints. Stay away from high gloss. I use Weldbond mostly. When doing the gluing I use a form roller and coat the entire back of the front piece. Clap and let sit at least 4 hours.
