young ned
I've been given some timber (again), most is PAR but there was four wood slices amongst it, I was told it's oak but not 100% certain, the slices are between 7 & 9 inches across and 1 to 1 3/4 inch thick, now the rub what to do with them ?, I've thought of a nativity but it's wrong time of year, but after that I'm struggling for ideas, I've added a picture so you can see them, the marks on them are not splits and they are dry ready to saw, so ladies and gents any ideas or pattern suggestions would be appreciated P.S. I forgot to add they have bark on Edited March 24, 2021 by young ned OCtoolguy
WayneMahler
I think wild life would good Eagle, Deer, that sort of thing. The one(s) that are 1 3/4" thick, I wouldn't go to a pattern that has extreme detail in it. At that thickness it can be hard to get it to look right. young ned and OCtoolguy
lawson56
I agree, some type of wildlife. Maybe just the head. Or a short phrase. young ned and OCtoolguy
Rolf
From the picture it looks like there is some spalting going on. I would not go too detailed on those slices as the detail will be lost. OCtoolguy and young ned
young ned
Wildlife is sounding a good idea, I will sand the surfaces down the next time I get in the shed, on the wildlife theme I might try a stags head on one of them, that leaves three more Edited March 24, 2021 by young ned John B and OCtoolguy
jollyred
Considering the spalting on the wood, be careful to not breathe the dust from sanding them. The markings are caused by a fungus, and the dust might not be too healthy. Be sure to wear dust protection and maybe go outside in a breeze. barb.j.enders
I like the idea of a bowl. Carol Rothman has patterns available. Or wildlife. Or on the very "figured" one, just a clear coat and done! OCtoolguy and young ned

Fedido
I might be thinking outside the box, but I have some that are drying right now that I intend to make clocks and tables. The clocks will be routed in the center and pour self leveling epoxy resin for a finish. That is what I plan to do. OCtoolguy

Cheers Katie, I did a basket not too long ago, on similar lines to this one, not on a wood slice though, I just have to get round pattern now to fit the wood, the one I have is for a square preprius and OCtoolguy
