Another disappointing issue came today

I stopped my renewal about 10 years ago.. I've often thought about re-subscribing.. over the last couple of years, more so for just supporting the magazine.. Even in the prime of magazines I rarely used a pattern from them.. as I always hated the way they lay the designs out on the huge paper then you have to crinkle it folding it up to fit into a scanner etc. Then scanning another pattern  from the same sheet you have a crinkled up paper.. just never made any sense to me the way they do it.. BUT anyway.. it is nice reading material etc.. and could be gone if everyone was to drop it for the online clubs/ groups / pages.. etc.

I am sorry you were disappointed. I got my issue today and we must have seen things differently, as I would not have said it was “focused on one subject.” I am not even sure what “subject” that would be referring to. 🤔  Maybe, “nautical” as there were several related to that but many others not. I thought there was a good variety of different types of projects. While I may not undertake them all, and not all necessarily appealed to me right now, I am sure there are things that will appeal to many others. There are so many aspects and areas to scrolling now that it would be difficult to always appeal to everyone with everything I would suspect. I do however usually find at least a couple projects I like in each issue. I am sorry you did not.

I admit that I have recently decided not to renew my subscription.  I've been getting the magazine for many years, but over the past couple, I'm finding fewer & fewer projects that interest me.  I don't blame the magazine.  They know what they are up against these days and are doing their best to stay relevant.  I figure if they added more content that interested me, it would mean that something else got sacrificed and then someone else would be unhappy and dropping their subscription.  One of the key points in all this, is that scrolling has become a much more diverse hobby, with regard to the projects that are available to us.  Years ago, traditional fretwork dominated the magazines.  Then we saw more of the portrait style patterns, as they grew in popularity.  Now there are all sorts of different styles and patterns, stuff we never imagined 15-20 years ago.  In the grand scheme of things, I think this is good for most everyone.  The fact that it has passed me by is more a testament to the limitations of my tastes and interests.

I hold no ill will toward the publishers of the magazine and wish them well.  Publishing printed material is really tough these days and getting much tougher.  I don't see that changing.  I'll miss getting new issues, but probably not as much as I should.

Imagine how many subscribers they'd get if the internet disappeared suddenly... we wouldn't have all these forums / groups to get access to patterns and many folks would depend upon a magazine and pattern books.

I've been saying this since around 2005... They really should be focusing on a electronic / online version of the magazine..

I contacted them a couple of years ago and suggested they make a portal for paid subscribers to download the patterns that are in the magazines so as to be able to print a pattern without destroying the enclosed pattern sheet. They blew me off saying "we aren't able to do that but thank you for your input". My response, " why"? I could do it and I'm old and not nearly as tech saavy as their inhouse team. Bosh!!!

Well, there are a lot of great pattern designers here and that is what you guys want. Why not have this community support the magazine by submitting patterns? Yes that is a hint to some (Alex Fox comes to mind), but there are many others. If the magazine is still around when I have more time maybe I'll submits some patterns.

I just renewed my subscription for 2 more years. I enjoy it even though I may not get something great out of each issue. There is no way that every issue is going to have something just for me. I really love just reading and seeing what others are doing/making and sometimes it gives me an idea. I'll keep on subscribing and I might even send in something I've made if I ever get good enough. Heck, I still subscribe to our newspaper on a monthly basis and it has gotten down to the point that the poor delivery guy has to add gravel to the bag to make heavy enough to throw. LOL>

I don't do many of the patterns at all in the mag, but I do enjoy reading it in my private room LOL

The articles aren't terrific, but I do enjoy seeing all the great things people have created

There are so many talented people featured in that mag

Every year I say no more, and then figure what the heck and re-up.

I got my copy yesterday and yes there is a Nautical theme but I see 3 projects I am interested in making.  The addition has designs by Fiona Kingdon, Sheila Landry and Charles Hand.  You don't always have access to these designers all in one place.  I really think the puzzle box is neat.

Just saying.

I would bet that they already have it in digital form and they do have some downloadable patterns on their website and sell CDs with the magazines on them.

HI everyone:

I didn't mean to get anyone upset about what I said when I wanted to not renew. I can see there are things for some to make in there, but it sure has changed since the old days when there was some real content in there. I am glad I have most of the back issues to get patterns from and look at.

Thanks

Bill

I still enjoy getting a piece of mail, regardless of what it is.  I spend time looking through it and have cut a few of the patterns.  There are more in the "would like to cut" pile than "already cut".  What I do find frustrating is that some of the patterns that are included are patterns that I had just purchased from the designer. I wish the designers would post patterns that are not available anywhere else.

I just checked my issues.
Spring 2021. I am interested in 2 patterns.
Summer 2021 I am interested in 3 patterns.
Winter 2019. Maybe 1

So, I don’t make everything in every issue. I do read it cover to cover. Every time.

These are just my thoughts on it.

Ya know, I read a lot. I've read thousands of books. Mostly all fiction. There are some that stand out in my memory and I might read them more than once. But there are others that I wish I had not wasted the time. My point is, not everything is going to be great or even good. But, I will still buy a book and read it and take my chances. Same goes with magazines. Not all good but most are somewhat interesting. That's all I ask. I'm really happy that we have at least this magazine as so many others have gone down the drain. I can afford the $50 every two years.

Have you read "Lonesome Dove"?  I finished my 4th reading of it last night... Emailed my family and told them when I die I want my copy of the book in my casket with me.... They all agreed it was not a problem,,,, they could do that,,, when???  No "Grandpa, or Dad... you have a long time to go... Just "okay we can do that,,,, when?"  True story... I had a sister-in-law that always said, when she goes, she wanted a porkchop, in one hand and a lily in the other to go with her... My brother honored her wish when she died...I ask no more...  By the way,,, in every reading of "Lonesome Dove",,,, Deets and Gus died.... I cried just as hard each time I read it..

That is my all-time favorite book and TV series. I've read the book 3 times and watched the series more times than I can recall. I want to be cremated so I'll have to find a copy in the library wherever I end up. I have read everything that Michael Connelly has written too. I love Bosch!
