I like it a lot.  Very well done.

From what I see, you did not use a backer behind the cut panel.  A contrasting backer would make the cutting read better and would provide you with a way to make a hanger system.  Two small "key holes" could be located in the backer behind solid areas of the cut panel which would allow the shelf to hang flush to the wall using small brads with heads.

I made a small business card holder with a similar vertical cut panel with out a backer.  I simply drilled two very small hole in the vertical panel and use small brass brads to mount onto the wall.  The heads of the brass brads are visable but they look OK for what I use it for.

Very nice! I love the look of cherry.

For hanging, you could use French cleats. Like Frank suggested, if you use a backer on the scrolled section the French cleat would hold it against the wall.

A french cleat will not allow the shelf to mount flush with the wall unless the cleat can be recessed into the backer.

I put little rubber feet on the back of the stuff I hang to protect the paint on the walls. This leave enough room for the French cleats and holds the item to the wall.

Thanks for the tips,  I chose not to use a backer on this because I never could decide what color so the fisherman would not look wonky and stand out. In 20 20 hindsight I maybe should have used a backer on just the bottom half.  Next time!

Nicely done - thanks for sharing it.

I use Keyhole hangers from Amazon:on some of my heavier hanging items. These things hold an incredible amount of weight if you use wall anchors and/or attach to a stud.

Too keep the item upright (appearing flat ) I add stick on felt tabs to the bottom

Just a note on wall anchors:

If not for this wall anchor tool, I would not be using or hanging anything anywhere - it was well worth the purchase price and paid for itself after the first use.

Before getting it, hanging things on walls was a real PITA!

Hi Badgerboy,

I got the pattern from The Wooden Teddy Bear, they are close to me in Idaho and I get a lot of blades etc from them.  The cherry spindles I got from Cherry Tree, forget where they are located.

I did this out of cherry, and I have to say hanging it was the biggest problem.  I ended up using the command adhesive hangers, not my favorite but I could not figure another way to get it close to the wall.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What a beautiful job you did on this project. Effeminately one to be very proud to display. I love not only your work but also the finish on it.
