More advice on buying please...

Recommended Posts

So i met a woman last night at a craft fair event.

She knew exactly what we had and was impressed that we were so focused on our product lines. Her husband had passed away in January and was very into scrolling.

She offered to sell me her husbands saws if I go pick the up outside of Atlanta, and so there is the rub....

I have no idea what a good deal for both her and I would be on 2 used saws.

One is a new Seyco 21" I think she said, maybe purchased from Ray at Seyco and a newer Excalibur  (china model) which I believe has not been repaired since he posted about here in 2019

Any idea or thoughts on the pricing for these would be greatly appreciated.

I don't want to "steal" them from her, I want to offer a fair price for both of us since I have to travel 4-5 hours to get them and since one is still in need of repair.

Thanks as always in advance

everything i have read on here and other forums is stay away from the china made excalibur saws. are you sure it is china made saw?  the seyco would be a real good saw depending on how many hours and what kinda shape it is in, and of course price.a new seyco saw is about $900 or so. if in really great shape and low hours i would think in the $500-600 range. dont see many seyco saws for sale. i have no idea on what a chinese made excalibur is worth. maybe kevin will chime in as he has one, and fixed it also.

Sorry to hear about his passing, I think this is the same person that I had message back and forth with several times trying to help him repair his saw..

I don't really know what to say a value of the EX is.. If I remember correctly he had a lot of vibration issues with the saw, and I think the saw was bought for a fathers day gift to him a few years back that his wife and daughter went in together to buy him, and it had issues right out of the box. He wrote the company and they replaced with another new saw and it also had issues.

Anyway if it helps any.. a new refurbished EX-21 is listed often on various sites for $499.99.. I think I've seen them for $450 a time or two as well on eBay.  I bought mine new in sealed box from a person that won it in a drawing at his work.. I paid $300 but had $40 in fuel to go meet up with the seller since he was from Ohio. I'm thinking since it's not a working saw.. not much of the parts are the same if needed parts for the seyco and most parts from the China saw would be much more poor quality anyway.. I'd guess $100 tops.. That said though.. if the saw is complete and not taken apart.. his issues could have been simple such as not properly mounted to a solid stand with all the legs of the stand properly planted onto the floor.. My saw was bad too without adjusting the stand and getting it all dialed in etc..

Again, so sad to hear that he had passed, he seemed like a very nice guy as he didn't have the heart to tell his wife and daughter that the saw was a piece of junk and he felt guilty to say he didn't want it because it was problematic for him.. he continued to try to use it the way it was.. I didn't know he had picked up a Seyco. though he did talk about it..

Sounds like the same guy, his name was Bob Rice if that means anything. He was a member here but doesn't appear to have been very active

He did do a lot of different scrolling though - his FB page has tons of his work

Yeah I think his name was Bob.. Not positive though.. I was helping two people with almost the exact same situation with the China made saw both never really posted in the forums.. they just PM'ed me for info. I get quite a few people that do that.. get PM's from people I never ever seen in the forums before..  But pretty sure this is the same person I'm thinking about though.

Good luck on whatever kind of deal you come up with.

I do agree with Dave.. I've never been one to like to "offer" someone a price, especially a  "starting price" More times than not I just walk away... I don't mind dickering on a price.. do that all the time.. even in box stores, groceries etc. But to put a price tag on someone else's stuff.. nope not me.. 🙂

Over the years, I've done this with various other things  - cars, computer equipment, scuba equipment on and on

I have no issue with offering a price - specially when someone doesn't know the value of what they have and are reasonable in negotiating.

She probably has no clue of a price and would have to get someone else to help her... I think I would offer her straight out what they would be worth to me..... I would give her time, if she wished, to consider my offer, meaning she could ask someone else for advice if she chose to...  I would not try to dicker with her or cheat her,, I would just say what I would be willing to pay...

Well since her and her daughter bought it for him as a gift they should have some idea of what they paid for it at least.. which in my mind can be good or bad.. I mean, they may think it should be worth what they paid.. as he didn't get to use them much.. if any.. The Seyco can't have much run time on it, he had health problems and wasn't getting in the shop much.. you know they paid $900 ish.. To me since the saw is basically new but still second hand top dollar and being generous I wouldn't give but maybe $600 - 650 but in their mind they paid over $900.. and might be thinking it's worth $800 -850
