Poplar is now costing me $3.50 bd ft or $51 per 16'x10" board. Insanity - thanks to you know who! Anyway, basswood however did manage to go down $.10 a bd ft Looks like I'll be trying out Grandis for some of our projects - it is not expected to increase in price in fact is expected to decrease slightly. I hope the prices for lumber continue to rise until they reach a reasonable level and stay there. Probably 1/2", but may have been what passes for 3/4" now. I don't use anything like that, but my head hurts just thinking about folks trying to build a cabinet carcass. A few mth's ago it was $12 a sheet, now $16.70 I was told the lumber prices are on their way down. I hope so. Be_O_Be Posted July 27, 2021 Report Share Posted July 27, 2021 We planned a kitchen remodel for April of 2020 & the way things went last year it was never started. Fortunately we purchased cabinets & 90% of the material in March of 2020 and missed the majority of the price hikes. Prices were moving up and I'm glad I bought and stored the material. We started the remodel April of this year and the few times I had to purchase 2x4x8' lumber from Lowes I found it cheaper to buy a 2x8x10' ,$4.00 cheaper, & rip it in half than 2- 2x4"s@ $9.00 each. The two times I did this the price tag scanned higher at the register than the posted price on the rack, once almost $5.00 a board more. They did give me the posted price but I wondered how many times this happened and the customer didn't catch it. We have sawmills in the area, going full steam with construction grade spruce, quality lumber gets shipped out of the country, the rest goes to British Columbia and none to our local lumber yards here as our Rona and Pineland get their supply from British Columbia. Certainly, not enough of the money gets to the workers. But, some does and I can tell you that there is now full employment at (mostly) decent wages in the mills and the forests in and near my hometown. This is what I found. 1" by 10" x 8' Poplar S4S 2-pack $139.00 That's about $8.69 a lineal foot. If you buy just one board it is over $9.00 a lineal foot. Outrageous. It's going to have to come down a lot before I pay that. I'm glad I had been buying and stocking up some wood prior to these crazy prices we see now.
