Charles Dearing pattern. I added one braid on the left side, his right, and the braids in his beard. I used black canvas with some holes in it as the backer, like the sails on the Black Pearl. As always Charles captured the eyes perfectly. The pattern is free on his site. Cut in 1/2 red oak. About 8" X 10".

Great job!  The area on the right side had to be very nerve racking with so little wood holding it. Any tips that you could share when cutting intricate areas like that to keep from breaking?

Thank you. It was pretty sturdy actually. I tied a couple of areas together that the pattern didn't have, to add some strength. I also add some width to the narrower places when I'm not comfortable with it. The biggest thing is planning order of the cuts. For example on the right side you mentioned I cut all the inside cuts on the hair and beads, then cut around the outside, cutting the extreme right edge last so nothing is overly fragile until after it's cut. If that makes sense. I'm not always the best at getting my thoughts from my brain to the keyboard.
