Wichman
Have any of you used the single direction bevel cutting technique? I've seen this technique is Spielman's books using it for letters; the bevel is the same for all the cuts, i.e. left, right and a spiral blade must be used. This gives the letters a shadow effect. I'd like to try it on a couple of project and don't want to reinvent the wheel. Thanks in advance. OCtoolguy
preprius
This sounds fun. Show examples please. I have done angled cuts for bowls and relief inlay. I like using spiral blades. So why does this technique need spiral blades? OCtoolguy
Wichman
The only pictures I have are copyrighted. I'll have to cut out a letter to show what I mean. OCtoolguy
preprius
Oh with some more thought and imagination, I can see how a spiral blade needs to be used.... Keep letters oriented bottom toward you. Angle the table to left or right. When cutting the sides of the letters without spinning the wood, the letters will be angled. When cutting the top you don't spin the wood. You just use side of spiral blade to go across top and bottom. Thanks you got me thinking. preprius
ok I tried this angle the table using 15 deg. It is hard to get a picture because the lens is not centered over each letter. Spiral blade. 15 deg left. wood is cheap pine ... shim stock. wood is always oriented bottom letters toward front of saw. Wichman
It's hard to tell from the picture, but, how well did the slant show up? Does it need to be more slanted? What size spiral blade did you use? Thanks in advance. OCtoolguy
preprius
blade 2/0. My thought is the slant is need to be more on thinner wood. The thicker the wood the less angle. The camera is over the "I" (above). So that shows the slant. Here is more pics. Alien is centered, then the "I" is centered. Edited December 14, 2021 by preprius added pic and descriptions. Wichman
I finally got a chance to work on this. The angles do not show up well in the photos, but here it is. 25*angle, 3/4 maple, 2/0 FD new spiral blades: OCtoolguy
preprius
Yes the 25 deg gives it a better emphasis of 3d. You can use it on letters on plaques. Left side of plaque with right tilt, and on the right side of plaque left tilt. So when viewing the plaque the viewer see emphasized perpective. How are you going to use this technique? Me. Wichman
I was thinking of using the technique on ornaments. This technique, at present, cannot be done with a laser, so, no competition for this style. preprius and OCtoolguy
Foxfold
Way past my skill level !! I'll just use the shadow effect text, for someone as hamfisted as me it's an easier alternative. Fab4
I'm with Brenda on this one - to me this is much simple - I do not use spirals But I will say, that when the bevel cuts are done right, it does look awesome as seen above Fab4 OCtoolguy, Wilson142 and danny
