Popular Post TRedd351
Hey Gang...I just found your site...I am Tom or better known as Grumpa, I think it should be Dude.... I recently retired and have always been a hobby oriented kinda guy. So built out my garage and added many tools - including a Delta Scroll Saw. Hadn't cut since grade school but it all came back fast and learned lots of new tricks on you tube. Below are some samples of my recent work. I do a lot of custom puzzles - from photos that people send me...complex pieces and my own whimsy pieces. My largest trouble lately - living in MI - has been finding a way to finish natural wood in the shop - no fresh air so fumes are too strong. Looking at adding venting to the shop ... or finding a finish that has much less odor. Biggest problem is finishing walnut pieces....walnut - the wood that hates me OK, I do ramble..Cheers and glad to be with da gang of wild Scrollers Tom GrampaJim, danny, Dave Monk and 7 others
old sarge
Welcome Tom from SE Arizona. I like your work. Workbench sized ducted paint booths are expensive. Maybe a range hood would work?
Blaughn
A welcome to you from Minnesota. I feel your pain on finishing issues. My love/hate affair is with Cherry. I have a project that has 5 area that are absorbing lacquer and refuse to be filled. Sigh!!!!!!!
TRedd351
Blaughn, that is my exact problem with walnut....part absorbs the lacquer and other areas ignore it...I think it is that my dad loved walnut and used it all the time. He passed away and has cursed the walnut I touch....Viking gods and things...Oh, Minn...sorry Blaughn

old sarge
I get up to the Gilbert area once in a while to visit my son and family. I cannot stand that traffic and congestion. The whole Phoenix metro area is stifling to me. My wife loves it though. I rebuilt an old captains desk many years ago and some of the wood took the finish and other areas did not. 4 0 steel wool dipped in the shellac and I just rubbed it/forced it into the 'iffy' areas. Might work with walnut, I cannot say. Might be worth a try on a piece of scrap. Good luck! ChelCass
Welcome Tom from another Michigander. I have the same issues with putting a finish on wood. I have to leave the shop until it cures. I turn on my fan and let it help clear the air. Then I will go have a cuppa and by then it is fairly safe to return. I need to build a box with a fan and small pipe but I will forget as soon as it warms up here TRedd351

TRedd351
Thanks Joe...I fit in spaces where topics are focused on complex political issues - like why is a #3 blade more popular than a #5 blade and the #12 blades feel such discrimination.....lots of turmoil in the Scroll saw corner of my shop..... Michigan is one of the most common states that dominate the majority of the license plate of the snow birds here in Casa Grande where I live. They can't wait to not have to put up with all the cold and snowy weather. You are moving the opposite that most people seem to want. All that said, I also want to welcome you to The Village and hope to see you around. I also hope you find a shop space where you can scroll when it is cold. Good luck on your move and when you get to Michigan let us know how things are going for you Dick heppnerguy
