barb.j.enders Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 Does anyone reuse the wires from around the blades for anything? Or do you just throw them out? Was a late night thought!!! OCtoolguy, jbrowning and Dave Monk 3 Quote
Rolf Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 Barbara I have had a need for some fine wire on occasion, I can't remember what I used it on. But I know where to find it. I also have a very big spool of fine magnet wire that I rescued when I retired. We used to have a spool winding machine for making custom inductors and coils in the old analog electronics days. preprius Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 I almost put them on violin cutting. Any string instrument. Also they would be good for hot wire styfoam cutter. A 9v batterry as a power source. Jim Blume, barb.j.enders and OCtoolguy 2 1 Quote

OCtoolguy Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 (edited) Can you all tell that we were born prior to the "throw-away mentality" came about? I can't stand to throw anything away. My Dad had a ball of string made up of pieces too small to save. Same with tin foil. Lol. Edited January 22, 2022 by OCtoolguy Jim McDonald and Rolf 1 1 Quote
Foxfold Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 Yes, I save mine. Always handy when you have something to fix I added some to a pair of broken earrings last week. !! barb.j.enders and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
NC Scroller Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 When my mother-in-law passed, we had to get construction dumpster to clean her house out We filled it and I mean filled it with empty carboard boxes, cookie tins, aluminum pie tins, balls of string and rubber bands, used gift wrapping, used gift boxes, used plastic tubs/containers (margarine, yogurt, takeout food), etc. Bottomline I toss the wire. wombatie, Rolf and OCtoolguy 2 1 Quote

Dak0ta52 Posted January 23, 2022 Report Posted January 23, 2022 Save it! Roll it up into a ball. When you open a new pack of blades, connect the ends and continue to roll it into a ball. Just think, one day people will come from miles away just to see the world's largest scroll saw blade wire ball. Better hurry. My ball is up to a half inch! wombatie Posted January 23, 2022 Report Posted January 23, 2022 I have 2 small sharps containers next to my saw, one is for used and broken blades and the other is for the wire off the blades. When I have a container full of old blades I wrap them in the wire and when we have some old metal to dispose of we take it down to the metal dump and I get rid of them there. Plus my husband has used some of the wire for whatever reason. Reuse and or recycle. Marg barb.j.enders and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote

The last time I passed by they were paying $8.50USD per 100 pounds of misc scrap. I think that is about 20 lifetimes of scroll saw blades. Jim Blume and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
Dan Posted January 23, 2022 Report Posted January 23, 2022 I watched a rifle maker (is there a term for that?) do some inlay on the stock. He used various types of fine wire to embellish the wood. I guess one could incorporate it in some work. Oh, I toss mine too. No hording in our house, except for wood and sawdust. OCtoolguy, barb.j.enders and Jim Blume 1 2 Quote
WayneMahler Posted January 23, 2022 Report Posted January 23, 2022 I was rolling mine in a ball. After many times picking it up after finding it on the floor. I gave a toss to the trash can didn't roll out of that. Jim Blume, barb.j.enders and OCtoolguy 1 2 Quote
flarud Posted January 23, 2022 Report Posted January 23, 2022 I keep my blades in a tube,, I also keep them partially wrapped in the wire. When I need to change to a different blade I put the previous blade back in the tube separate from the wrapped blades. This way I know that the single blade is used. Sometimes a used blade is what is needed. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Bill WIlson Posted January 24, 2022 Report Posted January 24, 2022 I have saved the wire. I don't save all of it, but I usually have a few pieces laying about. It occasionally has some craft applications. For example, one year I made some snowman decorations to give as Christmas gifts. One a couple of them, I fashioned a corn broom for the snow man to hold (the others held a snow shovel). I made the broom out of some short strands, cut from a full size corn broom, then attached to a dowel. I wrapped the strands with the fine wire to hold it in place and give it an authentic look. Ever since then, I have tried to save some of the wire, in case I find another use for it. Doesn't happen often, but occasionally it comes in very handy. barb.j.enders, WayneMahler and OCtoolguy 3 Quote
