pdmclardy
Hi i am just new to scroll sawing and would like some advice on how to finnish a picture, so far i have been cutting 4mm ply and glueing to a black painted backing board but i dont know how to finnish the edges ?? any advise would be more than welcome as the actual cutting seems to be the easy bit ! Travis
I don't bother finishing the edges. Most of the time, people don't even notice the edges. They're too busy looking at the picture you just cut. Plus I like the look of the plywood. To finish, I just put on a clear coat of acrylic spray and back it with black felt. Then I usually frame it (behind glass).
WolfmoonCT
I have done some wall plaques, with colored backing boards. I always paint the edges of the backing board the same color as the back is. if you ask me, it gives it a bit more finished look than bare plywood. But i'm using walnut, cherry, or a hardwood, so I think bare edge of ply would look odd.
Mick
I make frames for all my cuttings. I purchase frame stock from my local lumber yard, available in oak or pine. I make the frame the same color as the backer with either paint or stain. Mick
Dan
I agree with the others that framing it is the best. I found some cheap matting and framed behind glass. It's amazing what difference it makes.
pdmclardy
Thanks for reply's Travis this sounds interesting for some pictures where the cut out is in one piece but not so sure for them with multiple pieces Wolfmoonct yes i have done this also and think it is a good idea where the finnished subject is within the size of the backing board the problem i am having is when subject and backing are the same size , i have been using mdf for a backing and up till now i have used iron on edgeing to finnish it off , i have tried to make frames but never can get that perfect mitre Peter
Old Dust
I use the "Certificate" frames from Dollar tree. They are 8 1/2 X 11". $1. For a backing I use black felt or sometimes red. Another backing I use are scrapbook sheets with a design that compliments the cutting. At times I will glue the felt to the frame backing and then glue the cutting to that, especially for 'loos' cuttings. John Old Dust
TheTinkerinMan
pdmclardy-You can pick up a cheapo miter box and saw at Lowes for like 8 -10 bucks. The important thing, though is to make sure what you're framing is perfectly square. If not then you're 45's will still be off a little. I learned that the hard way.
