New DeWalt Planer

Well, My old refurbished Ryobi 13" planer is getting noisy and worn out.. Not bad deal since it was only $130 from the refurb outlet mall store that I bought back in 2007. Dang near every project I make the lumber when through that planer. I think the chain drive, and bearings for the rollers is worn and it's starting to snipe pretty bad on the ends and even in the center of the board as maybe the weight shifts.

Yesterday I ordered a new DeWalt 13" planer.. I sure hope it gives me as good a service as this old cheapy refub did. I got the extended tables and the roll around stand for it too.. Possibly upgrade to the Helical cutter head eventually.. would have ordered it new that way but I couldn't find any readily available and figured I can upgrade later after I wear out the knives etc. that comes with it..

Anyone in Michigan looking for a free ryobi send me a message.. It still works but sometimes snipes the board more than it should and who knows how long it'll keep working.. great parts unit or repair it if the parts are still out there. My intention when I got it was to get by for a couple months as I had been saving for the DW planer anyway.. several years later I finally get the DW that I wanted, LOL I'll be using it until the new one arrives and I get it set up so need to keep it another week or two.

I really like my Dewalt and have had it for about 5 years and use it a lot. A month or so ago I saw grizzly had it with the helical head for I think $1050. Don't see it now. I buy my blades from China for about $25. Been real happy with them. Can buy a lot of blades for the cost of the head.  I've heard the helical head is a lot quieter which would be a good thing.

Just got home from my local lumber / tool supplier.. They had a Laguna brand with a "like" helical cutter head and was actually cheaper than the DW that I just bought.. but I see a lot of good reviews on the DW.. and I personally have had nothing to say but good stuff about DW tools..  I need another table saw and really tempted to just get a DW jobsite saw.. I don't do a lot of work with the table saw.. mostly just cutting wood to size for scroll saw blanks.. mostly BBplywood as the chop / miter saw mostly does the solid lumber.

Hmmm.. Anyone know if the planer and stand come in one box? It was delivered today and the box is big enough for the planer but I'm doubting the stand is in the box too.. I ordered other stuff too that wasn't delivered yet.. so hoping that maybe the stand comes with that batch.. Maybe I should open up the box and see if the stand is in there.. I got other things to be doing and I know once I open the box the rest of the day will be tied into setting it up, LOL.. so I don't want to open it just yet, LOL

Just like any other tool, the stand comes in a separate box as it is an option.

Looking at my order page and the shipping details etc. They are showing that everything was delivered.. no stand yet but all my other stuff showed up.. The order does show they'll ship in two different boxes.. These items that ship in several boxes are always confusing the way they mark the item shipped.. Not the first time this has happen to me.. I'll give it until the middle of next week and if it hasn't showed up then I'll have to call and see what's going on.. Hope my neighbor didn't get a new DW stand on my behalf.. LOL They really should have each box have it's own tracking to track in case it get lost or? but the way they do it is screwed up in my opinion.. Thankfully I've never had an issue with these multiple boxes orders..

You will like the Dewalt planer. Mine has lasted 10-12 years and many hours of use. I finally installed a carbide helical head bought in 2007. It took that long to use up the straight knives. The helical head is much quieter, but leaves more snipe.  Would I do it again?  Probably not.  Avoid knot holes.  I broke the fan housing when a piece flew off and cracked the casing. It also chips the knives.
