Popular Post heppnerguy
I ran across an Judy Gale Roberts intarsia pattern that I purchased some time ago and never got around to making it so I decided I would give it a try. I decided as I was cutting it, to put it into a frame with a painted backer board.I showed it to my neighbor as i was part way through the project and he suggested that I place a bead into the center of the eye instead of a dowel. I liked that idea and did that. I liked the results of it right away. Also I was wishing I had a Wonder Wheel so I could emphasize the hair in the lions mane. I decided to give my Dremel tool a try and see what I might be able to do it using it. It worked pretty well and I am happy with the results from it too. So overall I like the finished project fairly well. Still struggle with gluing and finishing my intarsia projects but a little happier than I normally am. Dave, What I used with my Dremel tool was just a one of the small sanding units that look a little like the sanding drums on a drill press or sanding grinders. A barrel shaped sander. I just turned it on a mid speed and used the very top edge of the drum sander and ran it along the wood in spirts and found it worked pretty well. the photo was taken in my shop and the light was not really very good at the time so it does not show very well but it did turn out pretty amazing to me. I once tried it with my Dremel and a cutting or grinding sort of attachment but it was not a satisfactory for me as the sanding drum. Try it on a scrap of wood and tell me how you like it. I would be very interesting in your opinion as you are a much better craftsman then I ever will be and perhaps you can discover something of some way that may be a lot better than the one I use.. I really does not show up very well as the photo is a little blurry and under lit, but it really gives it a realistic shinny realistic look in real light. Kind of like the light shines in a persons eyes when you are looking at them face to face. It was a small shiny bead that i used on the lion. Beautiful work. Thank you Barbara for the nice comments. I am pretty happy with it myself, especially because I have gotten away from most intarsia items because it takes me so long to make them and scrolling is so much quicker to do. I am always looking for instant gratification from my work. As a result, my scrolling and intarsia if pretty mediocre for the most part. I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I was not sure if I would like the end results when i started cutting it but I have to say I enjoyed making the piece and taking the extra time to mount is on a backer board and making a frame for it too. I think it inspired me a little that I probably with start another of my intarsia patterns that I have purchased and never taken the time to make. Mark I would love to tell you the name of the woods I used for this but to be honest with you, my memory is so bad any more that I forget the names of even the common types when I try to recall their names. My health is superb but my memory is partly asleep it seems. Dick heppnerguy
