DeWalt Planer Chip / Dust Collection?

Am I missing something with my planer? The hook-up for dust collection comes straight out the back of the planer. I would think they'd send you some sort of elbow to direst it out away from the outfeed lumber. I sold my old ryobi yesterday and I can see that my 4" hose from my dust collector will slip over the fitting in the back of the planer but unless I drop it down from the ceiling, get a elbow, or ? it's going to get knocked off when the board comes through. I'm sure I can find a way to tie up the hose out of the way but I'd have thought they'd have a easier ready to hook up elbow or something that'd make more sense. Obviously the engineer doesn't understand the machine operation.. My Ryobi was designed in a way that the chips come out the one side and your hose would / never could get in the way of the outfeed.

So now that my rant is over, LOL.... How did those of you that have these DeWalt planers hook up your dust collection. I might not get back to my woodwork until mid summer.. I have my whole shop in disarray and I'm considering running piping all through the shop from my dust collector. I could pipe it down from the ceiling if I actually do pipe my whole shop out. Something I've been wanting to do but on the back burner, along with many other things. I may not even do any work this year and focus on getting the shop finished up they way I intended to several years ago, LOL

I am jealous that you got a planer.  One just wouldn't quite fit in my budget or my shop.  So, for now, I resaw close to the desired thickness and then use the belt sander to get the panel to the desired thickness and finish.  It is not as good as a planer, but good enough for what I do these days.  The belt sander is loud and makes a lot of sawdust, maybe about as bad as the planer?

Yeah the planer is noisy and makes a big mess in a hurry if you don’t have some sort of dust collection.

I guess I shouldn’t complain as it is a nice planer from what I read about them. Just seems like the chip outlet could have been a better design. I don’t know if I’m missing a part to it or that’s just how they came. Seems pretty silly to have the port straight out the back in the center of the outfeed area, lol. Maybe I’m missing the idea or a part for it. Who knows but I’ll figure something out.

I currently can't get close enough to the dust collector so I just attached some elbow and attached a dust collector bag to it. It does a great job. When our garage is built I'll move the shop out of the basement and have a better set up, but this is working great for me. It's out of the way and collects the waste.

You just like to sir up controversy Kevin! Order a 90° fitting from Amazon. It will be there tomorrow. Fortunately for me, I already had one when I got my planer.

You may be onto something with that first sentence, LOL. You know, my el-cheapo Ryobi had a molded dust shield cover that had a built in port... off to the side too, LOL.. Seems like DW could have included a fitting at the price of the equipment I still have to buy a elbow. I guess I can sort of understand as not everyone would be using a 4" connector as some hook to a shop vac. etc.. To be fair I had to buy a reducer for the vac. to hook up to my 4" hose so.. DW just don't know so they let you buy what you need.

Amazon!! I hate that place.. I try to do as little business with them as possible.. Oops there goes another of your first sentences.. 😂.. Lets just say I'm a seller on Amazon and I know how they treat their sellers vrs. their customers..

That's a pretty interesting set up Dan. Does that bag get heavy and pull on the tubing?

Yes, slightly. I could rig up a brace or shelf to put under it but I'll wait to see what I do when I move it to the garage. It does cut down on noise without the dust collector running and it's easy to empty.

I have the older model dewalt (DW734), and it came with a 90 degree dust port to attach to the planer. It's removable so I store it in the drawer below my cart.

My vac hooks right up to it as well. It's actually one of the best dust control units I have in the shop LOL

I sit mine on the tailgate of my pickup and let it blow into the bed and then send the Grand daughter up there with a broom and sweep it up...lol.  One of these day's I'll get around to some kinda dust collection in the shop.

Why?

Just the easiest way I've found.  I don't have a stand for my planer,  nor room in my shop for one.  The first time I used it I sat it on saw horses in the yard and it made a massive mess so I just decided to sit it on my tailgate and blow into the bed of the truck where its easy to clean up.  Not a perfect solution, but it works.

I love it! Simple, easy, and cheap. Plus, the bed of the pickup is a hell of a lot bigger than a dust collector. Hmmmm….. I wonder if my wife would let me buy a new “dust collector”.

Sounds perfect to me. No dust collection system needed. A broom, a sack and a hose. Done.

  • 3 months later...

Late to the party, but I saw a YouTube video from a guy selling a aftermarket chip cover allowing the exit of chips through the top of the planer for the dewalt 735 you did have to cut a hole in the top cover but it did look great. I I have a 735 and considering doing it to mine. I'll see if I can find it and post it here.

I really don't see a big advantage doing what he did. It could still use an elbow.

Two advantages for me

I can fold the tables up without having to disconnect everything

My planers always connected in it own spot dust collection comes down from cieling so no hoses to trip over

But we all have different needs .
