Bench

As some of you may know I set about building a new bench/stand from my King 16" I got last fall. After much planning and thinking on it I came up with what is in the picture.  I wanted something heavy so I could minimize vibration.

It made from (8) 2X4's and weights about 40 pounds. Best thing was I had the 2X4's on hand as I had purchased 37 of them prior to covid for a project that never got off ground,  they were just hanging out in my garage.

The center leg is not so wide as to make me uncomfortable while cutting.  It's solid as a rock. No plans really,  just started with an idea in my head and ran with it.

That thing could double as a tank stand. Very nice job and well engineered. Are the 2x's all glued or just bolted together?

They are all glued, no screws or nails. I'm thinking I will want to add some extra support under the table to support the top over time.

Looks rock solid.  One question.  The foot pedal seems to be in an odd place.  Is it there just for the picture?

Actually when I'm in position to cut the pedal is in a very comfortable location, that was one of my main concerns when figuring out the leg design and location. I wanted to make sure they didn't interfere with the pedal or my feet.

Now you just need to get busy and build in the self-contained dust control system like I did on mine. Using a MetroVac 500 and a mini-cyclone its very small and is all underneath out of the way.

Exactly my plan, I like the way the vac connection under the table is set up.

Very sturdy bench, I like the design. How do you like the King saw?

I went from a beginner 16" to the Delta P-20,  so that was quite a leap forward.  I was sure that I wouldn't find anything better which is why I really hesitated to get something new. I really lover the Delta.  After much research and getting input from everyone here at SSV I took the plunge and got the King.

This thing,  for me, is another leap forward in my scrolling ability.  I've had it for about 6 months now,  took some time to tune it, again the people here on SSV were invaluable to helping me get that done. But I gotta say I really love this saw.

If you're thinking about getting one, don't hesitate,  go for it!

I don't know if you have tried it and rejected it or not - with that thought have you tried tilting the scroll saw toward you.  Along with many others on the forum, I have set up my Ex so it has a 5 degree tilt toward me.  It really helps the back strain and fatigue.  It would be easy for you to slip some spacers under the saw's back feet to try it out.    😀

I tried this and it did help. My problem is that I keep my table highly waxed and I had problems with stuff sliding off the table. I had a 2x4 under the rear feet. About 3 1/2" lift. Not sure of degrees. Maybe too much.

At 5 degrees I don't notice the tilt when working but without it my back gets tired very quickly.  When someone mentioned it years ago when I was just getting started it sounded pretty radical.  Now I don't even notice it.  This is a personal preference item that is easy to try and then undo if it doesn't work for you.

I may give that a try, thanks!

Luckily for you to have the lumber on hand, right now that table would set you back 80.00 bucks. Nice.

Remember not long ago, people would burn job site leftovers rather than return for credit?

I have a hard time tossing any wood, no matter the size. I had to slip some short scraps in the legs as a couple of pieces were a tad too short. I have scraps stroed all over my shop. When I need one it's like a treasure hunt to find the right one (lol)

Join the club. My shop is 9 x 13 and loaded to the max. I've got wood stashed all over it. One of these days, the termite police are going to come for me. I get cutoffs from Cherokee Woods whenever I go out to their yard. So far, everything has found a spot in my shop out just outside in one of my cupboards. I throw nothing away. My wife hates it.
