Anyone using China Birch?

Recommended Posts

My supplier just got a shipment of China Birch @ $30 per 4'x8'x1/4" sheet.

I am thinking of getting a sheet to use for a new line products since 12"x12"x1/4" Baltic Birch is now way of out price point for me

Has anyone used this product recently? I know in the past (5-10 years) there were consistency and layer issues with using it, but I've been told with recent improvements it has gotten much better.

Thoughts welcome!

Thanks as always in advance

My wife and I are trying very hard not to buy anything from China. I'd be looking for some other choice. JMHO.

Haven't tried it.  Several months back I bought enough BBply to keep me stocked for a while.  I did see recently (possibly here?) about a different birch ply that is being produced.  Ah,, it was on YouTube, I'll try to find that video and link it here.  In the video it mentioned a distributor in Jacksonville, FL that had some.  That's about an hour away from me.

I've heard that Finnish birch is good but I guess they are considered "Baltic". Not sure about supplies coming from there.

I bought several sheets of BBply once I seen the price hikes and heard that it may be hard to get it.. I've got about a 2-3 year supply.. Meanwhile I have been searching alternatives.. and so far I really like the quality of the Columbia Forest Project Panels from Home Depot.. I use the thin 5/32" stuff but they have 1/4" also. Comes in a variety of species but so far I've only tried the Maple. I'm using it for Portraits and Ornaments so far but I also will be trying it with signs that'd have a backer on them. In the past I've also used this for cutting jigsaw puzzles and had good results. I'm not sure how the pricing is on this stuff compared to BBply, I know it was a bit more $$ than BBply back when I tried it.. but it is available.

I'm not sure what you're trying to make but also have read about flooring underlayment? or something like that.. maybe someone else can chime in on that stuff.

I bought a very small piece from home depot ( Miss the baltic birch )

it had a very rough exterior on one side - thou it said birch and Im not convinced it is -

like alot of things from china - buyer beware !

Alot of things coming from china are scams and fake - i try and stay away from anything from china .

Im having a problem getting lawnmower parts from china - Kohler went to china

and i have a lawn mower and it needed a gas pump -Ive gone threw 3 of them in less than a year .

Im looking for a new lawn mower without a crappy chinese motor ( like Kohler - and have heard Briggs and stratton has gone this route .

Yes, truly sad that everything went to China. Time to bring manufacturing back to this country.

I recently was given a couple of 12 X 12 inch sheets of Flooring Underlayment to try. It cuts Great with very little fuzzies on the back. Glue sticks great to it, one side will take paint extremely well and one side will take stains perfectly. Plus it has a pretty cool  pattern and color to it. I can forsee myself using it more from now on!
