John B
G'day all, Not a real problem, but just wondering if anybody else has had problems with the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #3 Blades. I have had these for quite awhile, but find that they tend to break at the "Crimp" after a dozen or so hole changes (Clampings.) I have a new batch. only a couple of months old and will get around to trying them ASAP. It's a bit of bugbear especially since 90% of the blade is still good, just short Also I'm getting a little tired of Jumping every time one does break, good exercise, though it may be lawson56, danny and OCtoolguy 1
kmmcrafts
I don't use FD blades a whole lot any more but I do use the #5 quite often as the entry hole for veining can be a smaller hole than a Pegas blade.. that is the downside to pegas blades. I swap back and forth between brands quite a lot depending on the material and project.. My blades gotta be 5-6 years old so maybe older than what you have.. I've not had any issues with them.. Sometimes they get a run of bad blades.. I've had it happen in both brands over the years.. Hope your new batch solves the issue as it can be quite frustrating to break a lot of blades.. do more blade changing than cutting, LOL OCtoolguy and John B

don in brooklin on
I use FD-UR #3 all the time. I have not had any issue with breaking and some I think would be a couple of years old. They get mixed in with new ones I have bought. Pete sent me some he got from Garnet Hall that he did not like. I tested on my EX-21 and then have used with my 101 coursed on DW788. Not a problem. Recently the blades were slipping out from the bottom blade holder. I did everything I could think of changed to pegas, removed bottom blade clamp and screw, reset, sanded the blades, degreased - still no change. I have an EX-21 and checked the arm was parallel to the table and it was out just a hair. reset and there has not been an issue since. Back to my favorite blade FD-UR. danny, OCtoolguy and John B
WayneMahler
John Haven't had any problems with the ones I have and use. You said they were breaking around the crimp ? Try putting them in a little shallower in the top clamp. May just be the clamp is trying to flatten the crimp giving it a weak spot. Also make sure the clamps have smooth surfaces and haven't developed a sharp edge. Keep us posted . John B and danny
lawson56
I have used them in the past, never had any problem with them. I am presently using Sharktooth now. bugbear is a new one for me too. I have got to remember that one. John B
crupiea
When I start breaking a bunch of blades almost every time its me causing it somehow. Not saying thats the case here but i will notice i wasnt as relaxed as usual or in a bit of a hurry and such. FrankEV
At the moment I exclusively use Pegas blades. But even so, I have found that you can overtighten the upper clamp very easily when doing a lot of blade hole changes. When I overtighten, I tend to get the hockey stick bend in my blades, exspecially the smaller blades and even more so with spirals. Isuspect, like others have mentioned, your upper clamp must be cutting into the blade causing the breakage. But overtightening will speed up that breakage. I have found you only need to obtain a minimum "SNUG" tight of the clamp to hold the blade. Yes, occasionally, my blade will slip out of the top clamp, but I rather have that happen then crimping the blade. Also, overtightening the tension can cause blade breakage, but usually somewhere in cutting area of the blade, not at the clamp. Just my 2 cents! Wichman
Just a thought, but have you checked the pivot points to make sure they're not sticking? John B
