Find a chair that is comfortable and build a stand to match. I don't like sitting so my stand is designed for me standing. The miter saw stand worked out perfect, and I'm 5' 9". I have a chair that I can use with the saw, stand or sit depending on what's hurting.; the chair is a hybrid ( bottom from HF top from tractor supply ) and I cut a piece of plywood to be a foot support/foot switch platform, the plywood rests on top of where the legs bend. From the floor to the saw table is 39" crupiea, ChelCass and OCtoolguy
preprius
Double duty chair wore out. My wife surprised me with a new chair. She got the tall version to match the Hawk stand. . I use the chair for work from home. I moved my day job corporate computer in the garage so my indoor cats do not bother me. So I roll it to the scroll saw for double duty. Daily use wore out my old chair fast. I am 5'9 at 200 lb. We took the old one to upulstery shop they want >$200 just for materials. If they did it it would 4 month wait plus $labor. The new chair was delivered Monday night. I need it on lowest setting for scroll saw and 3 inches higher for work bench. here is a pic old vs new.... crupiea, ChelCass, barb.j.enders and 2 others
Bill WIlson
I don't know if there are any specific "rules", per se. Obviously you want the chair at a comfortable height. What that height is can be something of a compromise. Some say that you want the table at about elbow height (sitting or standing) because you don't want your elbows bent much more than 90 degrees and your hands/wrists to be on the same plane as your forearm. This is to reduce stress on your hands and wrists. The other factor is distance of your eyes from the table. You don't want to be hunched over, leaning down to be able to see the cut. So, this is where the compromise comes in. The table should be at a height that isn't so low that you are always leaning forward to see what you are doing, but not so high that you are putting too much strain on your hands & wrists. I will agree that your chair is the most important factor in this decision. I suggest that if you don't already have one, to get a chair that swivels and has adjustable height. This allows you to set the height where you are most comfortable. I sometimes change the height of my chair while I'm cutting, if I'm starting to feel tension or discomfort in one part or another. Many of us like a stand that tillts the scrollsaw towards us. This helps us to see the pattern and blade without leaning forward. preprius
I am not afraid of doing the work. But expense was more money for foam and parts as a new cheapy drafting chair. Plus my wife made a decision before I could find and order parts or chair. zimmerstutzen
I stand. In fact, I usually use a old small Craftsman portable scroll saw on top my table saw top. I don't cut many intricate fret projects. Mostly out lines. I like having the scroll saw table up about the bottom of my rib cage/elbow height. Most of my use is for small quick stuff. Rarely anything that takes more than 2 or 3 minutes per item. Standing just seems to be better. If I were to build or buy a stand, I would want something I could put my legs and feet under as I sat at the machine ( more like sitting at a desk) Most of the commercial stands do not make such provisions, although a few do have the table sticking out, just not far enough to suit me. If that upholstery shop quoted you that price for materials and a 4 month waiting, you can bet they did not want to do the job! I used to do a little bit of upholstery years ago and I never run across any material any where near that price . To do that small chair shouldn't take more than 2 days even fitting it in between larger jobs! If it was myself you should take your wife out for a very nice dinner and evening of daninching! She did the next best thing for you! Erv OCtoolguy and barb.j.enders

preprius
well I have only had it about 10 days. My butt needs to re-adjust. It is harder that the wore out chair. This version is a quick adjust. Meaning you stand up to remove the weight off the lever. Then you can just pull the chair up. This version is 3 inches higher than the screw up/down chair. Also note this version of the chair does NOT swivel. The whole chair rotates on wheels. The screw up/Down version swivels. You can choose color variations of wheels , material, and steel. After some more time I will re-post and say yea or nea. what ever i am stuck with it. I might have to limit sit time to about 90 mintes. I put this chair on a floor mat so it does not roll out around. The wheels do roll really easy. OCtoolguy
preprius
Update... I have had my Vyper chair for quite a while now. I sit in it over 3 hr at a time without my but going numb. I would recommend the screw adjustment version due to it going a bit lower. My bench is a bit higher so the chair I got works well. Now I ran across a pretty interesting chair called catperch. It is used for telescope viewing. But I think it would be good for scrollsawing also. The mini version for scrollsawing. https://www.wood-wonders.com/catsperch-chairs/ Plans or kits or fully assembled are available. Me.
