Eplfan2011
Anyone hooked up any sort of dust collection to their hawk? I've got a regular workshop hanging fliter near the saw and wearing a respirator/mask but it's still messy. Maybe a tray under the table connected to a shop vac ? OCtoolguy
There are many threads here on The Village all about dust collection. I know I've seen a few youtube vids regarding the subject and there was one particularly aimed at Hawks. Also, @Rolf has a nice setup on his Hawk. For myself, I have 2 Excaliburs and a Hegner and I've incorporated MetroVac500 car vacs into each saw so that each saw can be moved and still have it's own onboard dust collection. There is nothing finer than scroll saw dust. It will KILL a regular shop vac so it's very important that you incorporate some sort of cyclone into the system you design. I've been using a mini cyclone that I purchased from Amazon/Aliexpress for under $20 ea and they work great. Eplfan2011
kmmcrafts
I have the basic same thing as Ray but I went the pricey route and bought a kit from Seyco.. https://www.seyco.com/dv-10a-cyclonic-action-scroll-saw-dust-collector/ That said, maybe I just scroll too much for this little rig but I'm not at all satisfied with this set-up. It does catch a lot of sawdust.. I have to either change or blow out the filter in the vac. about once a week.. and every couple weeks have to empty the gallon canister.. I can live with that part, however the sawdust on the top side of the table seems to get pushed around by my turning the work piece and within a hour or two I have a lap full of sawdust.. very little makes its way to the floor now that the dust is collected at the bottom of the table.. This system I have needs a suction hose at the top of the table as well.. I'm doubtful the vac is powerful enough to hook it up to a T for a second hose. I had much better results from a shop vac connected to the dust port on the Excalibur.. I bought a vac and a dust separator like Ray has to put on my Hawk a couple years ago.. I haven't hooked it up since I'm doubtful this is power enough to collect from both top and bottom.. @Rolfhas a nice set-up on his Hawk using some PVC pipe and a Festool MIDI vac... I plan to do something similar to what he has done for my Hawks, The older Hawks like my 226VS Ultra has the lower arm behind the angle mechanism and there is a hole in the stand with a plastic plug in it, I've seen people put a threaded fitting in there to hook up a vac. The new Hawk BM-226 I bought a couple years ago the lower arm extends out through the angle mechanism.. and if you set close to the saw the dust lands in your lap, LOL OCtoolguy

I need to go into the attic where some of my tools were stored ( and forgotten) after loosing my leg, I'm certain there's a festool Planex and matching dust extractor up there. The dust extractor is designed to handle very fine dust ( it's attached to a drywall sander) and even bangs the filter every so often so the dust falls off it and keeps it from clogging. I think it would be the perfect scrollsaw vac lol attached to Rolf's pvc collection system ..... Thank for mentioning festool shop vacs lol..... Rolf
Putting my system on the Hawk G4 26 was easy as there is so much room, on the top and bottom. The entire assembly is held on to my Hawk with Mag switches. I can easily move it to my EX 16. But there is not as much room for the nozzles especially on the bottom. I have a design in mind to work around that when I have time. I put a metal plate on my EX table so that the Mag switches had something to grab. What ever system you use I highly recommend a trap in line with the vacuum. You WILL suck up some small part that you want to keep, digging through a bag of dust is not fun and re-cutting that perfect piece can be tricky. I may make a new trap so it acts like a Cyclone. Even bought the Scrollnado to hook up. Didn't work. OCtoolguy
Scrappile
If I may interject related question.. When you use your dust collection do you have it running full time when scrolling or do you have it turn on and off with your scroll saw? The reason I ask,, I had a nice Fein vac attached to my scroll saw dust collection... The vac only last three years, three months and the motor burned up. I think the short life was because I had it going on and off with my saw. Just curious. Mine was a set up similar to "Rolf's". Paul, I have mine hooked up to the foot switch and has been that way for a few years.. no issues so far.. Before I got the small vacuum set-up from Seyco I had my shop vac hooked up like that for about a year, just couldn't deal with the noise.. but the shop vac did way better dust collection through the EX-21's saw vac port than the Seyco vac system does.. Is that what tells it to run for 15 seconds? I have mine running through a dust deputy too but after I built the on-board systems I stopped using the Fein for that purpose. I use it now just for general shop cleanup.
Scrappile
The inner timer put in by the manufacturer of item with a warrantee, that tell the item when it can fail,, usually set and warrantee period, + one day... mine was a mistake went 3 months longer than it was suppose to.. I guess I should be thankful for the extra time. OCtoolguy and kmmcrafts
Sycamore67
I use a Festool CT26 on my scroll saw and it goes on and off with the saw. I having been using it for more than five years and no problems. Most of my scrolling is puzzles or Intarsia so I do not turn it on and off like those doing fretwork. I have it plumbed with dust pickups above and below the table and does a good job. OCtoolguy

It's weird but now, at 79, I look at many things I'd love to have but then I step back and ask myself just how much use I'd get with the few years I have left. I look for deals on used equipment and if I find something at a price that fits my age I'll buy it. Sycamore67
Age is A good consideration at how long you will use it. The other point with age is health. The scrollsaw makes a lot of very fine dust which is the most harmful and a good real HEPA vac protects my lungs. I do not like just blowing the dust away as the fine dust will float a long time. I could wear a N95 or N100 mask but I find these difficult to deal with. Before I retired, we had to wear N100 masks most of the time and they are tiring. I have an air cleaner going all the time, I use a respirator mask with the proper filters on it and I have dust control on all of my saws. When I work out on my driveway, I have a 16 gallon shop vac with a dustopper that I hook to my table saw and router. I try very hard to keep the dust under contol and to keep it out of my lungs. My hearing is pretty well shot so I don't wear any hearing protection. Probably should have years ago but the days of the drag strip and Art Arfons' jet dragster pretty much took care of my hearing. Oh well, I can get along without that but I have to breathe.

I think the short life was because I had it going on and off with my saw. Just curious. Mine was a set up similar to "Rolf's". When I run my dust, I run 2 main units: an overhead for air born particles and my main dust collector (the HF 2 HP). I do NOT start and stop either when I am cutting. I start them, do my cutting which usually lasts a few hours then shut them down and move on to one of the next phases or other projects. I do similar with my shop vacs that are connected to my table saw and sanding stations - I start them when I start the cutting or sanding projects and they stay on until I'm done cutting. I was told on another woodworking as well as an electricians forum (and believe to be true based on my experience with other motors) that starting and stopping them constantly decreases the life of the motor. The reason being the sudden start of a motor produces a significant impact to the motor when it starts similar to what happens when you start a car engine I know from experience computers suffer the same way and so I haven't turned off any of my computers for years (I restart them periodically but never shut them down unless on vacation). Works for me so that's how I run them Scrappile and OCtoolguy 1

OCtoolguy
Anybody who is thinking of buying the new Scrollnado, you can buy the cyclone portion of it from Aliexpress for about $5. The rest of the kit is pretty much just plastic hose. If you are at all industrious you can probably put one together for under $20.
