Charles Hand Racoon

Great work Dick. Your granddaughter will love it. I have an aunt who loves raccoons but I will not be cutting this one for her even though I knew when I saw it on the magazine she would love it. I just do not have the patience to drill and then cut all those tiny little holes. 🙃 All those threading the blade back through the holes! 🫣😩At least I know this about myself and admit it and admire those of you who do.

Wow! Dick, very detailed indeed! Just great too see all the work you have put into this project! Thank you for letting us see, Bob👌👍👍👍

thanks for the nice comment. I have not had a lot of shop time lately but the wife is traveling for about 3 weeks so I hope to get more shop time now, for awhile, anyway

GOOGOOGLYGOO!!! That is just AWESOME!!!👍👍👍 My eyes would have crossed long before I was done. I know she will Love it.😃

It is just a long time cutting little holes. The end project just is evaluated by the many holes I made in the wood. the more absent pieces there are in the wood, the more interesting the holes become to me

It is a rather challenging pattern for me but that is what I like about scrolling. One can choose to challenge themselves anytime they desire to do so. Sometimes it is having stayed away from a new form of scrolling because it is a little scary for you. Followed by, 'if I try it an fail, I will have to just try again later'. If you do not wish to challenge yourself to spend that much time, then let my challenge you to cut this for your aunt. It is a long time before Christmas and if you started the pattern now and only worked on it for 30 minutes, each time you sat at your saw, you would easily have it done before Christmas and not even had a chance to get tired of threading the blade into all those little holes. Go for it...you can do it.

Sorry Dick, I have plenty of things I work on that challenge me. I have tried some fretwork in the past but have learned I don’t enjoy doing it and I don’t have the patience for it. Maybe one day I will, but I know right now I don’t. That is one of the things I like about using a scroll saw, there are lots of things you can do of different types with it. Thanks to the Village and our friends here, including yourself who was a great encouragement to me when I first started, I have learned and tried many different types of scrolling projects over the past 6+ years. Many were ones I would never have thought of trying without the help and encouragement of everyone here. However, there is also nothing wrong in acknowledging that some are just ones we don’t like or have the patience for even if we do admire and appreciate that work done by others. 🙂 My Aunt does have an Intarsia raccoon that I made for her. 😉🙂

I have presently been challenging myself of late to learn to carve, presently learning relief carving but want to learn to do in the round carving too  and I just took a class at our local store to learn turning. I hope to use the carving with some scrolling (have done a few pieces that I hope to share soon.) I want to turn and use carving with it. I would like to turn wig stands for our local cancer support group on who’s board I serve. I like to try new things all the time.

I hope you did not take my remarks as any kind of a put down. I understand that everyone has different types of items they  enjoy cutting and some that do not even interest them. I am way too one sided on my thoughts about what I want to cut and what I see as something that  does not even interest me to consider. I was  just trying to encourage yourself to give it a try as it  sounded like you liked the fret but didn't like the idea that you may not succeed or that it was just to long of a time to invest in doing it. I was really only trying to encourage you to give it a try, as I knew you were capable of doing it. Please forgive me, if you saw this as a criticism as that was never my idea. I love your work and cherish the friendships of the  people  here in the Village, you included. Once more I apologize for my poor way I appeared to come across in my note to  you.

@heppnerguy Dick, please don’t be concerned that I was upset by your comments. I was not, you have always been encouraging to me (and everyone else) since I first visited the Village and started my scrolling journey.  I realized you were still just encouraging me to stretch my skills here and took it as such. I have tried many new things with my scrolling because of encouragement of you and so many others here in the Village including some fretwork. 😉 I just wanted to explain, that I had tried it but at this time, it wasn’t my favorite type of work, especially really detailed pattern like this one. ☺️ I find them beautiful, and know the patience, skill and time involved and admire those of you who do them. I just have learned, I can’t drill all those holes, unclamp, rethread the blade in a new hole, re-clamp, cut another small segment and do it over and over and over again.  🫤🥹At present, I have learned I don’t have the patience or skill required. I do do a few fretwork patterns, but I limit the size and holes needed. 🤫🙂 if I ever give a detailed one a go, you’ll be the first I tag to see it. 😉🙂 in the interim, I will admire yours and others works on them and challenge myself in other ways. 🙂

After cutting the 'peace sign' pattern of Charles Hand and really appreciated all of his efforts when I had trouble downloading the peace sign. After all the time he gave me, I remembered Charles Hand had another of his patterns on the front of the last  Scroll saw magazine so I decided to give it a go also. I  have a granddaughter that had a racoon for a pet several years ago and decided to make it for her for Christmas as a reminder of that time in her life when she found the little racoon outside her home. If you also have the magazine, you might want to give it a try, I used a #2 spiral Peg as blade and cut it with a 1/4 inch Baltic Birch ply. enjoyed cutting it and found it quite challenging too.

Oh I am so comforted by your response. I never try to put anyone down for anything I don't agree  with them on. I would rather forgo a comment than cause a problem. I sometimes do not express myself very well and my remarks can be taken wrongly. thank you for your understanding. Like you, I too cherish the friendship and sharing on this site and the people's willingness to help others. If I do not like something someone posts, I may push the 'like' button but  I just pass on making a comment. You are the best.
