Magnifier/light

I haven't been happy with my harbour freight magnifier/ light but to be honest my eyesight is far from the best.

My collage age daughter had to get a upper and lower GI today and my wife and I drove the hour and a half to be with her. She needed a new tire on her car so we took it in to get it replaced, it happened to be next to hobby lobby so we decided to look around while they replaced the tire. While looking around I saw they had a Ottlights on sale for 1/2 price $69.99, one of you had recommended it so I picked one up hoping the optics are better quality.

The procedure went well and they found nothing which was good. I'll give the light a try tomorrow to see if it works for me.

All-around good day. Happy that her procedure went well. I'll have to run by our Hobby Lobby tomorrow and see if they have the same deal.

I'm pretty sure it's store wide as I looked it up on the HL website, on there it actually had them priced at $79.99 but also at $69.99. The one I got was there last oneScreenshot_20220823-230401_Chrome.thumb.jpg.34207eb84959f66df7c40c845ddb6cdc.jpg

I have the Harbor Freight light, and I have a much more expensive one. The thing about the higher priced one is the lens is glass versa plastic on the HF one.. It s is a little more clearer.  However I use both... I have mounts in several places were I can use them... One at my lathe, one at my workbench... and I always had one on my second saw when I had a second saw...  The HF light is florescent and florescent lights bother some people.. The more expensive one I have has LED lights, sometimes it is almost too bright for me..

Glad your daughter's results were good.

Thanks Scrappile,

I just assemble the ottlight butI haven't scrolled with it yet. The lens image is definitely better to my eyes and I also like the light, the light being floor standing is going to take some getting used too I hope it not a deal breaker.

Edward,

I don't dislike the Harbour freight light just that it doesn't give me a crisp image. I can't really blame the light as I was double dosing some extremely noxious chemo drugs which has messed up my vision and hearing, the ottlight magnifying lens sharpens up the image a lot for me.

I guess we're all different and there's no one answer that's suits everyone, and really that applies to everything in life.  I'd certainly recommend the HF light to anyone with fairly good vision and as you say it's great value!

Paul, I have a H/F light and it has a glass lens. I also upgraded the bulb to an LED. It works fine. I also have a light that Rockytime put me onto way back from an eBay vendor for $25. It is my favorite. It came with an LED bulb and a great lens. I'd buy another one if I could ever find one like it for the same price.

Yeah, after looking at the ad for your light, I realized it was a floor lamp. Not good as I swing mine out of the way after every cut and am able to focus it where I need in on the flex arm.

I used my H/F light while wearing my progressive lens glasses. I had double cataract surgery a few years back that left me with great distance vision but I missed wearing glasses and hated having to carry "readers" so I had glasses made that have no correction on the top and progress down to up close for reading. That's what I use to cut with looking through the magnifier. For me, it's a "no-brainer".

Plus one ...

Fir what it's worth I've tried the magnifying light like that ,never had any success with it. I switched to using 2 sewing machine lights and a magnifying visor. Much better. My work surface is much better lit and I can move my head and the cut line stays in focus.

Re visiting this thread.

The ottlight worked well but being floor standing it began to get in the way, so I decided to revisit the HF light I originally bought. After trying it again I decided the problem was it just wasn't bright enough, I ordered a bright new led bulb for it and installed it today.

I must say that it's a different light now and seems to work well for me. The Ottlights now sitting by my work bench for detail work, i do a lot of small soldering so it will replace my small unlighted magnifier.
