Ferris Wheel

I bought these plans somewhere around the late 90's. While I was fired up about this project when I got the plans, I was still pretty new to scrolling and when I looked at the plans I decided it was a bit to large for me to do on the Ryobi 16" single speed I had at the time. Plus I didn't want to use plywood (too boring) and my wood knowledge was non existent at the time.

Well, now it's 2022, and I'm finally ready to take this on. I won't be using plywood, rather making my own laminate to take advantage of natural wood colors. I have 2 saws that are more than capable of handling this project.

A question for anyone who has done this project, is there any reason why the 2 wheels can't be stacked for the cut. I've only look briefly at the plans, but really don't seen any reason why they couldn't be stacked?

I'd stack cut all I could.. the wheel, the fence and the uprights,, Probable most the pieces of the seats also.  This quite an undertaking.  Keep us posted.

I've never done this pattern but I have to agree with Paul, stack cut all you can. Set a lot of small goals and before you know it, it'll be complete. Cheers!

I can see a lot of pieces that could e stack cut. I would carefully check the 2 wheels, but don't see why you couldn't. Like Dan said, a lot of small goals should make this more enjoyable.  Keep us posted on your progress.

Re: laminating your own wood - suggest you consider 1/8 BB and veneer it.  Veneer of about any wood you want is available. ( see here  https://www.veneersupplies.com/categories/Raw__Wood__Veneer/Wood__Veneer__A__-__G/  ). Not sure want your budget would be but a good pump and bag would be around $350

Got enough copies made, over the next few days I'll get together a materials list then get wood ordered.

I'll post pictures along the way, this will take me probably most of the winter as I only get a few hours a week on my shop.

I'm really looking forward to the challenge.

Just had to post this. I sat down today with the plans to generate a parts list for all the little stuff, like motor screws,pegs and such. I searched everywhere but no accessories kit for this anywhere.  So as I sat down with the plans a little voice went off in my head to check the back of the file cabinet where I keep my plans.

Apparently when I purchased the plans I was smart enough to get the accessories kit too. There it was in the back of the file still sealed firm the post office when it was delivered. Surprised the crap outa me, didn't think I was that smart (lol).

So if ever there was a sign, this is it. Its Ferris Wheel time......

I am gonna put in my 2 cents worth, even though it's been awhile since I have stacked cut any thing, that's the way I would go. I agree keep us posted.I would Love to see the finished Wheel.

Just want to let everyone know that I plan to officially start somewhere around the end of November. I will be posting in the "Works in Progress" thread when I do. Between now and then I have a couple of small projects to finish up, then gather the wood for the Ferris Wheel  Until then I will be going thru the building and cutting process in my head. This helps me to get a game plan together for when I actually do start. Looks like I will be able to stack the main wheels and a couple of fence parts. The main wheels being stacked will save a ton of time!.

Looking forward to it Chris. I should take lessons from you on planning. I never plan. I just jump headlong into a project and I'm sure that's why I end up doing a lot of it more than once. Sorta the way I've lived my life too. I guess I'm too old to learn new tricks.

i built the dome clock a few years ago. i think there was only 1 or 2 pieses i couldnt stack cut- mainly because those ones didnt have duplicate pieces.

stack cutting is the way to go. it not only speeds up the process but also helps with consistency of the cuts of the parts.

After seeing your post, the idea hit me to keep a log for this project. Hours cutting, wood cost and such. Might be an interesting set of information..

i agree. i havent gone through that thread since i posted it. didnt make me feel like doing another one but fun to reminisce.
