wood slices - walnut

I hvn't been on here in a while but I wanted to share this one with you all. The wolf pic might just be my favorite project thus far.

These are slices of a black walnut tree about 13-14 inches in diameter. one with a cougar and one with a wolf and trees cut out. the cougar one is about an inch thick, the wolf is about half an inch or less in some spots. I put a 1/4" thick baltic birch plywood backer board painted black on the back of each to keep it from falling apart. the cougar slice checked really bad and would be 2 pieces if not for the backer.

plus the backer gives the nice black background contrast and a way to put a strong hanger on it too.

I cut them with a chainsaw then sanded smooth. (started with 60 grit belt sander, then kept going up to 220 grit).

I didn't want to use the plainer because I was afraid it would tear off the bark.

Plus I let them dry first before sanding and they warp as they dry which would never work in a plainer.
