mikesscrollsaw Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 I hvn't been on here in a while but I wanted to share this one with you all. The wolf pic might just be my favorite project thus far. These are slices of a black walnut tree about 13-14 inches in diameter. one with a cougar and one with a wolf and trees cut out. the cougar one is about an inch thick, the wolf is about half an inch or less in some spots. I put a 1/4" thick baltic birch plywood backer board painted black on the back of each to keep it from falling apart. the cougar slice checked really bad and would be 2 pieces if not for the backer. plus the backer gives the nice black background contrast and a way to put a strong hanger on it too. DWSUDEKUM Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 Nicely done Mike. Thanks for sharing it with us. DW Quote
Dan Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 That's a cool idea Mike. Did you slice the wood yourself? Is it planed or sanded? We have lots of walnut around here and I've been wanting to try something like that. Quote
mikesscrollsaw Posted November 19, 2011 Author Report Posted November 19, 2011 I cut them with a chainsaw then sanded smooth. (started with 60 grit belt sander, then kept going up to 220 grit). I didn't want to use the plainer because I was afraid it would tear off the bark. Plus I let them dry first before sanding and they warp as they dry which would never work in a plainer. Quote
Xray Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 Very unique, maybe you should try a custom clock with a slice. Quote
Oges Posted November 20, 2011 Report Posted November 20, 2011 Lovely looking timber there, have you tried it will a lighter coloured backer? Quote
