Advice on buying second hand scroll saws?

On Ebay, in my area, there is an Axminster scroll saw from 1997 (14 years old) starting about about £10, and from another person, a SIP band saw from the same year starting at £25. They say they're in good working order and the scroll saw comes with a whole bunch of blades. A woodworking friend of mine said he wouldn't pay more than £10 for something that old because you don't know how much longer they will last.

What do you think?

Hi Ives

I live in the UK as well and have just seen the scroll saw on Ebay. Axminster are a large woodworking machine company that have a reputation for excellent customer service. I've used them for several machines that I've bought over the last 2 years and have found them to be one of the best companies I've even dealt with. As to buying a 14 year old machine is a question I'm not sure I could answer as my engineering skills are lacking to say the least, but if you go onto Axminster Tools web site you will be able to see their current range to compare. One thing I would say is, if you are serious about Scroll Sawing, the saw on Ebay needs a tool to change blades and that in my opinion is a no-no.

Hope this helps.

Roy
