Scrappile
The one with the dimple on top is the mid size... As Ray says match up the slot and the one with the biggest slot it the biggest the other is the littlist. Which is the only one have ever used because I have never used a blade bigger than a #5 If you get the. Quikclamp it is good for all sizes. I am stating this from memory which I have had over a #5 of either. kmmcrafts and OCtoolguy 1
Scrappile
I would not try to replace those springs, Any spring that is strong enough to lift the upper arm up and keep it there is good enough. When I modified mine so the arm would go up higher I picked up the spring at Ace Hardware. It in not nearly as strong as the original spring was. kmmcrafts and OCtoolguy 1
OCtoolguy
For some strange reason, and I have no idea why, the stands ALWAYS look like they've been to Ukraine and back. The only thing missing is the bullet holes. Edited February 7, 2023 by OCtoolguy kmmcrafts
kmmcrafts
I'm going to clean it up and paint it I think.. maybe use some quality automotive paint or maybe even have it powder coated. Painting it I can do myself but I don't have powder coat equipment.. Also some, maybe a lot of that on the top side of the stand is that oil / dirt gunk as I haven't cleaned on the stand at all yet.. maybe it'll also clean up more than I think, though there are spots of flaked paint and rust too so I'll probably just paint it. OCtoolguy
Why bother? Unless you like standing at a saw, you'll probably either cut it down or build a different stand. I'm thinking of cutting the legs off of mine.
scrollingforsanity
Looks like you got a good deal. If you don't like it you can always sell it. I bought one like it a few years ago, I believe for a $ 130.00. It was not the saw for me. Nothing against Hegners they are a fine saw, it just didn't fit my sawing style. Sold it for $ 300.00. Hope you like it. OCtoolguy

I have been watching for one of these for at least 7-8 years.. but everything I find is $700 plus or one of the old ones without the front tension and quick clamp etc.. I finally somewhat gave up looking daily etc after I got my new Hawk.. always said I'm going to get a deal someday.. The few deals I did find looked like they been dragged behind a car for 50 miles and still wanting $400+.. This one looked rough too but $50 asking price was worth at least going to look at it. I had in my mind to buy it at least for the foot switch and stand. But it turned out to be in good condition and free.. just dirty scrollingforsanity

I actually like the taller stands, all three of the Hawks are tall like the Henger so I'm used to it.. My DeWalt was tall too.. the Excalibur is much shorter even though I have the legs adjusted all the way up.. Really like the 3 legged stands of the Hegner and the DeWalts.. Hawks are the same way.. either love them or hate them.. I've known of Hawk owners that bought a new Hegner and didn't like it.. also known of a couple Hegner owners that got Hawks and didn't like them so.. I was looking on the Hegner site and they show different sizes … Anyway, just wondered how do I know what sizes I have? Kevin, look at the gap sizes in this picture. With the clamps open take your feeler gauge and measure the opening. This will tell you which clamp sizes you have. Scrappile
I really think, unless you use big blades often, the smallest clamp is all you need. I use up ti a #5 size and have never used either of the other two clamps. kmmcrafts and OCtoolguy 1

The clamps that came with my (used) saw have that dimple but when I measured the gap it was 0.020” (.5mm - small clamp). I ordered a pair of .7mm clamps (mid size) and they don’t have the dimple on them. OCtoolguy

OCtoolguy
Here is the info: Choose 0.5mm (small - .020") for sawblade sizes 4 or smaller. Choose 0.7mm (medium - .028") for sawblade sizes 5 thru 9. Choose 1.0mm (large - .040") for sawblade sizes 10 or larger. BadBob
kmmcrafts
Anyone use spiral blades on the Hegner.. That's be interesting trying to get a 2/0 twisted blade into the 0.5mm clamp.. Probably a must to untwist the ends so you could get proper clamping.. I know Charles Dearing exclusively uses spirals and he uses a Hegner.. Scrappile
I do quite often mainly for enlarging the vain in a piece. Cut it with a flat blade then go over it wiith a 3/0 F. D. spiral. As a mater of fact I use the clamp to sort of straighten the end. Work it in there than clamp down on it. I do it on both ends. The only spirals I have used are the F.D. 3/0 and the Pegas 2/0. Spiral require a liittle more tension because, I think, when you fire up the machine it stretches out the twists a little so you need to compensate for that at the beginning,,, That is my theory anyway. I've got a few larger ones that came in an FD sample pack. What size should I buy?

If I remember correctly he use a #5 F.D.,, do not know which clamp he used but I would thing the middle size one. OCtoolguy

I have some #3's I bought 20 years ago, LOL.. The largest one I use is a #1 and that's pretty rare.. My go to is a 2/0 FD-NS.. But if you go with Pegas they tend to run smaller so a #1 is closer to the FD 2/0. I should also note that the Pegas are quite fragile so they are not my go to for that reason.. They break very easy.
