Help with wood... please

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this scroll sawing and recently came across this forum.

I have been using a Dewalt saw for the past couple of years to cut out requests from my spouse.

Everything I have cut out so far has been 1/2 thick letters for decorations.

My wife recently requested 2" letters for Holiday decorations.

I bought a 2 x 12 from Home Depot and tried to cut through but kept going through blades.

What is the best thicker would to buy?

Also any recommendations on blades for thicker wood.

Thank you in advance,

Matt

Hi Matt, I am no expert but I quite often cut 2 inch thick basswood. I use my saw mostly to cut cut-outs prior to carving. The blades I use for the basswood are Flying Dutchman Spirals #5. It is quite slow cutting but it does the job for me. There are probably better alternatives and perhaps I will learn something if others jump in with suggestions.

Good luck

If your cutting 2x, I'd suggest either a #5, #7, or #9 Scroll Reverse blade from Mike's Workshop. Have you thought about cutting 3/4" poplar? Its pretty cheap, found in any big box store, and it cuts really nice. I think it works great for lettering. It also takes paint really well. I usually cut 3/4" with a #5 scroll reverse.

For thicker wood you need less teeth per inch on the blade so it has a chance to clear away the sawdust...for 2x.. I use a Royobe(sp) pin end blade from HD....cuts great at full speed..(no variable speed on my saw)..

(you can tap the pins out to put the blades in your Dewalt)...they don't make tight turns like the small blades do though. Just my two cents.
