Popular Post Hawk
The past few weeks I've been tinkering with carving and wood burning. I was looking for a way to enhance a few walking sticks and canes I'm working on. I've seen tons of both which carvers and burners turn out some incredible projects. So, after many, many failed attempts at both, I've come to the conclusion that I'm am, and always will be a Scroller! After some thinking time I believe I've figured out out how to get pretty close to the carved and burned detail on the sticks and canes with my scrollsaw. It's said that confession is good for the soul, with that in mind let me say; My name is Chris, and I'm a Scroller! Now, back to your regular scheduled show..... crupiea, FrankEV, ChelCass and 8 others 6
Fish
I’d really like to see your work. I’ve made a bunch of canes and walking sticks but have never tried carving or scrolling on them. I have seen pictures. I’ve used Osage orange ( hedge apple ), it’s very hard wood, and contorted hazelnut. I mainly did them to take with us when we go hiking and made a few for a friend that needed one. kmmcrafts
Funny you bring this up.. I get friends and family that know I work with wood ( note I didn't say a woodworker ) and they always asking if I can make a kitchen table or a dresser or some other oddball thing.. While I work with wood as in creating scrolled art? The term "art" is loosely used here but I definitely have no idea how to make a table, bench or cabinet and those types of things.. Mostly only use a scroll saw to do my creations and many times don't even know how to use that on some of the oddball request I get. ChelCass
I am a scroller mainly but I am also a woodburner. My husband on the other hand is a woodworker. I can show him a picture or describe what I want and he can create it. He amazes me with his self taught ability. This is why I make sure he has all the tools he needs. However when it comes to scrolling he hands it off to me. We make a good team. Plus any repairs needed around the house he does. If he is not sure he will go to You Tube and find a video to show him what he needs to know. I am very blessed. danny, MarieC, meflick and 3 others
Popular Post Sycamore67
I am a woodworker first. I have built cabinets, furniture and even a Maloof rocker. But, father time has caused a change with arthritis and difficult back issues and so I have been changing. It started with the scroll saw and love my Hegner. I have made many puzzles for Grandkids, Christmas ornaments, and Intarsia. All I can do sitting down. Well the shaping and such on Intarsia has led me to power carving and more detailed Intarsia. I have made canes, small animals, and dinosaurs. Again, all, I can do sitting down. I have modified my shop to let me sit and do this as well as great dust collection as I work. I tried wood burning but the smoke even with fans and dust collection was too much. This all has been an evolution over time to meet my physical and mental needs. I just love making things from wood no matter how I do it. barb.j.enders, ChelCass, OCtoolguy and 7 others

Randyw81
I consider myself a scroller too. I have made a few furniture pieces over the years. Due to space limitations I still do some smaller woodworking projects, but 90% of my woodworking is scrolling. I like many kinds of scrollsaw projects, but my specialties are ornaments, baskets, and fancy firewood. kmmcrafts, danny, OCtoolguy and 3 others

MarieC
Hi, my name is Marie and I am a rookie at all things wood. But I love wood...I think it is because it effects all your sense... I love the smell of it, the feel of it especially when it is sanded, the looks of it - I think there are so many beautiful woods, plus I like the sound of it (especially rosewood). One thing I have enjoyed is seeing all of the unique and beautiful creations you have all made with wood. I am still searching on what I really want to do with wood. I do enjoy making cabinets and drawers but they are heavy. I do like scrolling but I get frustrated with myself at times. My ultimate dream is to make a wooden chair or loveseat with beautiful scroll work on it....I know that is a long way off still... Sycamore67
I think trying everything is kind of a mistake IMHO. I would try a couple of things with simpler projects. If you like them after awhile, then do more. If you do not like them, try something else. Do you want to be Jack of all types or more proficient at one or two. It also depends on what tools you have. Somethings take additional tools or are more expensive to do. My desire is to get better at Intarsia and some types of puzzles. danny, MarieC, Hawk and 2 others 4

I found that I can satify my need for working with wood in the newfound hobby of scrolling. It seems to satisfy my need to create something. I keep looking for patterns that I can use but with some alteratiion to come up with something that serves a purpose. I'm really not into wall hanger or desk sitter. But, I appreciate whatever anybody makes if they truly put their all into doing it. Larry, your intarsia is beautiful. Your love of the hobby shines through. Different strokes for different folks, the reason I'm learning to scroll is so I can combine it with other crafts, I don't need to be a master but want to be proficient. When I'm at the level I need to be I'd like to do some furniture inlays and piercing amongst other things, plus my wife's always wanting a sign lol most of all I want it to be fun and enjoyable. There's nothing wrong with being a jack of all trades, it's a shame that name carries a stigma, being just proficient in many areas still means you can make, many different attractive projects. kmmcrafts, OCtoolguy and MarieC

You described me. I'm a jack of all trades and master of none. I've not run into anything that I can't at least attemp to fix or make. Sometimes I get in over my head and have to ask for help but most generally if I did deep enough I can find the answer and git er done! preprius, MarieC, Eplfan2011 and 1 other

Scrappile
I'm a scroller, because I am afraid all the other more complex things I have wanted to do/try may have passed me by: wooden boat building, kumiko, marquetry, carving, woodburning, Harmonica playing, Hotrod building, car restorer, pilots license, Big game hunter, explorer, sky diver, Career lifer Marine, gold miner, worlds greatest lover.... alas all passed me by, so I am a happy scroller. It is tough but someone has to do it! Edited March 18, 2023 by Scrappile danny, Hawk, Gene Howe and 2 others 2

TAIrving
I am a scroller first and foremost. But I also enjoy wood-turning and dabbling in other forms of woodworking. Nothing big, my shop is too small for that. I also enjoy studying and investigating the many aspects of woodworking. I read the Wood Database to learn about the properties of the various types of wood. Friends who do other types of woodworking have given me leftover pieces of many types of wood, some of which are slightly hazardous, so I have learned to be cautious. Like others of our members, I am on an enforced, temporary sabbatical right now due to medical issues, will do a separate post about that. danny, ChelCass, Gene Howe and 2 others
