Resin?

I don't think epoxy is going to work very well in this application. Epoxy runs like water and will find its way thru the smallest of holes or cracks.

If you want some color to fill in, I have used this stuff, easy to work with and lots of colors.

What is actually the difference between resin and epoxy? In Fiona's video, she specifies resin with a hardener. Is it just words or is there a difference.

As far as colorant goes......mica powder gives you the " river " look with the streaks in it. Regular colorant is semi transparent and can be used in the fashion of stained glass where sun shines through. I have some alcohol ink but have never used but others use it making coasters and it gives you an abstract sort of look. Amazon has it all relatively cheap. I use the " let's resin "brand, but have used the cheapest stuff with good results.

Not really any difference, a lot of people use the terms interchangably

Only care needed is to get the right one Resin/epoxy for the job.  For crafts probably getting what a craft store has.  For pen making or boat building there are different kinds depending on what you are doing at the time.

I'm curious about something. I was just PM'd by a new member going by TJ Brown. He has tried to post some pictures of what he has done using resin in his cuttings but can't seem to get "approval" from the Admin who is in control. Have any of you folks heard of that problem in the past? TJ has done some very nice pieces and his resin is beautiful. He wants to add to this thread and tell us how he has done this in the past. Can somebody get in touch with Travis and see what is going on?

I tried this previously and had a problem.  I used blue painters tape on the back to hold the epoxy in the cutouts.  But the epoxy seemed to dissolve the adhesive of the tape and the epoxy leaked badly. I have not tried again due to the leakage problem.  

My question is: does the adhesive of the packing tape hold up or does it tend to dissolve from the epoxy?..

Another member posted a video of Fiona Kingdon pouring epoxy and she clamped her project piece to a backer to prevent leakage.  And I see that you used a backer along with the packing tape.  Did you also clamp you piece to the backer?

No, I don't clamp it. When I tried a single layer years ago the same thing happened to me as it did to you. I found that leaving around an inch of wood on the outside of design to stick the tape to and using a double layer overlapping 1/4 or so solved the problem. My sure the tape is flat with no creases/tunnels for the resin to run out.

Packing tape/blue tape does not work very well with epoxy.  You will want to use the aluminum foil duct tape. You also need to be sure every little hole and crack is sealed or epoxy will find its way thru it.

If I recall, Fiona used paper that had a coating of beeswax on it.

I use Tuck tape and it works real good.

Then use a double layer of tape overlapping the piece next to it by a 1/4 to a 1/3. The most important thing is to make sure that the tape is flat. If you have creases they act like tunnels and it will let the resin leak. I’ve been doing the color fills for years.
