Cameo Box

This is the first time I've attempted a box. The pattern is from Steve Good and he called it a Cameo box. The box is 1/4-inch pine, the inter liners are Oak ply and the Cameo on top is Birch. The box was stained Minwax espresso and the emblem is birch and dipped in 50/50 Linseed oil and Mineral Spirits. I still have to spray the finish which will be Polyacrylic and I'm considering of adding Flocking to the interior. While it was fun to cut and build, it was rather time consuming. Hope you enjoy.

Your box is great.

Boxes are fun to make and yes, time consuming, but worth it when they come out nice.

For that reason, and for as much time and effort you put in to making this box, I feel you could have use a better species of wood.  Pine does not take stain well. 

Alos, if it was me making this box, I would have installed backers on the inside of the box walls, of a contrasting material (like the Cameo), and then added a felt or other type lining.  Open lattice type boxes lack practicality, which I think most would prefer to have.

Being this was the first box I've cut, I wanted to use a lesser expensive wood to test my skills and to find out if I would actually like doing this. The other reason I used this pine is because it was a true 1/4-inch whereas the other materials I had (Birch, Maple, Oak) are not true 1/4-inch.

The inside of the box does have liners as the pattern Steve Good designed. I originally painted them red but there wasn't enough contrast between the dark stain and the red backer so I painted the backers an off-white using artist acrylic paint. I do plan on adding Flocking which is similar to the felt lining.

I would have preferred to use a solid exotic wood rather than plywood but I'm working on a budget. I have to make due with what I can afford.

My cat loves boxes.

Anyway good job on the box. 

The sides look like the time consuming parts.   You can stack cut but still takes a while.

I hope you continue to make some more boxes. It was one of Steve Goods patterns that peeked my interest in scrolling. Before I started scrolling I only did intarsia. I was getting tired of intarsia but always thought scrolling was things like an outline of a heart or maybe a cat with no details to them and I just found it boring to make and look at. The pattern that stuck my curiosity was a heart shaped box that looked like it was woven. When I found his page and looked at how it was done, I was hooked on scrolling and have been at it every since.
