OCtoolguy
I ran across a picture of a segmented basket/bowl done by Carole Rothman. I know it's in one of her books but I don't know which one. Maybe somebody here has the book and can clue me in. Anyway, I've looked at this picture for about an hour and my head hurts from trying to figure out what sort of a glue-up would be required to make this piece. I can understand the rings but the pieces in between have me wondering. I hope somebody has this pattern or book and can let me know. Thanks in advance. I'll be happy to buy the book once I figure out which book it is in.

I thought I'd see if anybody might have her books and be able to tell me which one to buy or not buy.

don in brooklin on
Check out this article https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/simulating-segmentation-with-the-scroll-saw/ Carole also has a section in Scroll Saw Wooden Bowls book on doing Open Segmented Bowls Page 197. Oval but same process. Pretty cool. If you want to contact Carole I was able to contact her with as PM on Scroll Saw Workshop. Now I know which book to search out. Edit: I was wrong. I went to the article but I can't figure out what book it might be in. And I still haven't found a way to contact her. Scroll Saw Workshop is Steve Good's site. Woodworker's Journal wants me to subscribe. So, I'm still at a loss. That article does answer a lot of questions I had but I'd like to buy her book if I can figure out which one. meflick
Ray, Carol sometimes participates on the SSWC magazine’s forum which I believe is what was being referred to above. It can be found here: https://forum.scrollsawer.com I have some of her books, I will check a little later to see if I have the one with that bowl in it. I have to go out on some errands first. I think that exact bowl was never in a book. Only in the article in Woodworkers journal. You can always PM Carole and ask. I wanted to do a perfect sphere. I PM'd here and she sent the article. meflick
Ray, I checked. I have two of Carole’s books. One is wooden boxes and the other is “Wooden Bowls from the Scroll Saw.” Unfortunately, it does not appear that it contains that specific segmented bowl you have pictured. It does have some bowls similar in curved shapes like this one, but not the open segments like the one in your picture. However, I do think the article that Don provided the link to from Woodworker’s Journal provides the information for doing it as a “simulated” open segment, scroll down towards the bottom of the article for that specific info. I finally found a way to contact Carole Rothman and she was kind enough to send me the original article with the needed patterns. I can't wait to get started on this project. I want to make it bigger than 7.5" so I'll have to glue up some scraps that I have. Still deciding on which woods to use. James E. Welch
I've never tried to make a bowl with a scroll saw. I have with a lathe but that's a different story. I'd like to try it eventually, looks like a neat process. OCtoolguy
Bill WIlson
For the most part, the scroll sawing on basic bowl shapes is fairly straight forward. To make these bowls, one must have a pretty high tolerance for sanding though. meflick and Roberta Moreton
