Fish Posted August 19, 2023 Report Posted August 19, 2023 My brother is thinking about buying this at an auction. Can anyone tell me how it looks, what shape it's in? He says the folks who had it didn't use it much. How old is this one? How much would you ask for it if it could be cleaned up and worked ok. Thanks for any input. Quote
kmmcrafts Posted August 19, 2023 Report Posted August 19, 2023 I might have to leave it up to the Hegner pro's on here since I don't know a lot about them.. What I do spot is no up front tension release.. This I believe would mean it's a older saw.. I can't tell if it's a 18 or 22 inch saw by just looking at it but I feel kinda like it's the larger one. If more photos was available Hegner puts the year stamped on the I.D. tag.. zooming into the photo I can see the tag still on the saw right in front or to the side of the Bellows area is the tag. My 18 In. saw is from 2002 and has the up front tension so I guess it's probably older than that. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Joe W. Posted August 19, 2023 Report Posted August 19, 2023 The only advise I can offer is to look for a serial number to try and determine the age of the machine. Then check for the ability to get replacement parts. I once bought an old bandsaw, only to find out replacement parts were no longer available. Quote
Sycamore67 Posted August 19, 2023 Report Posted August 19, 2023 The picture is not good enough to really tell. However, no matter how old, you can get parts. You should see it run to make certain motor and speed control are ok. They are expensive. Also, how many blade chucks it has as they are not cheap. If it looks good, I would maybe go to $100-150 max. kmmcrafts Posted August 19, 2023 Report Posted August 19, 2023 Couple more thoughts.. The saw can be converted to the newer style arms for the up front tension release.. though I think a bit pricey. Might not hurt to look over the parts list on their site so you have an idea of parts prices.. Larry's post made me think about that as I think most everything is available but some parts are not all that cheap for these. Quote
Fish Posted August 19, 2023 Author Report Posted August 19, 2023 Thank you I’ll pass it on to my brother. Quote
Scrappile Posted August 19, 2023 Report Posted August 19, 2023 Can't tell much from such a small picture. If it runs it may be worth salvaging. the up graded upper arm is around $130. Can't tell what size it is. Probably a 14" or 18", Can't tell if it is variable speed if not it is not worth a whole lot and if it is and variable speed does not work, that id expensive to replace. But if he knows electronics maybe it can be fixed pretty cheaply. I would not pay a lot for it. Especially if I could not see it run and try it first. MarieC and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
Fish Posted August 19, 2023 Author Report Posted August 19, 2023 He just bought it and got it for $80. Not a major loss even if it ends up not working. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted August 19, 2023 Report Posted August 19, 2023 Wish he would join here and show use what he got. Maybe we could help him restore it. Just in case this is where he can get manuals and parts. I have always gotten good info and service from them:https://www.advmachinery.com/pages/hegner-home OCtoolguy 1 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted August 19, 2023 Report Posted August 19, 2023 Any Hegner, working or not, is worth $80. If it runs and hopefully it's variable speed, he got a great deal. I wonder if any other parts came with it. Convince him to join SSV. Quote
Fish Posted August 20, 2023 Author Report Posted August 20, 2023 (edited) I talked to him again. He got it working and said it ran good. It is variable speed. He’s not sure but doesn’t think it was used much. It’s pretty old and is gonna get info from the company. He got it and other tools at an auction out in West Virginia today. I told him about SSV and how helpful everyone is, and how much he can learn here. Thanks everyone for helping. Scrappile Posted August 20, 2023 Report Posted August 20, 2023 That is great. A little TLC and elbow grease and he will have a great saw! OCtoolguy 1 Quote
rash_powder Posted August 28, 2023 Report Posted August 28, 2023 $80?? He stole it!! I got mine for $400 from a pawn shop. IIRC, its a 1996 model. Runs great, does everything it should. The parts from Advanced Machinery still fit just fine. Hope he has fun with it! Quote
