I just finished the same one out of 1/2 Canary Wood, finished with raw linseed oil.  Also made a base with a spot for a tea light using a Forstener bit. 

How long did it take you to drill and cut?

I'm doing bases as well. I stacked 2 cutting and drilling about 2.5 hrs

1/4" birch ply double stacked with a pegas #2 super skip
