wagner1958 Posted Saturday at 11:06 PM Report Posted Saturday at 11:06 PM Finished this up this afternoon and I have a small crack in the lower corner, it was not there when I started but this is just the nature of wood sometimes. It is 1/2 inch cherry, I have not stained it yet so all options are open. I’m not selling this so I could just leave it, or overlay it with different wood or somehow fix the crack . Any advice would be greatly appreciated , thank you OCtoolguy, JackJones and barb.j.enders 2 1 Quote
Dan Posted Saturday at 11:30 PM Report Posted Saturday at 11:30 PM I would add wood glue from the back, just enough to get into the crack but not seep out the front. Once that glue is dried, wet sand the front side around the crack with whatever finish you plane to use on the project. The saw dust/finish slurry should fill any cracks. Once this dries, sand the whole project and apply your finish. I don't know if any penetrating finish like BLO I tung oil will work with this method. OCtoolguy and wagner1958 1 1 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted Sunday at 12:07 AM Report Posted Sunday at 12:07 AM Are you sure that is a crack? It looks more like where two pieces of wood were glued together. Look at the two different grain patterns. No where close to the same. I don't think it's a crack. wagner1958 1 Quote
wagner1958 Posted Sunday at 12:29 AM Author Report Posted Sunday at 12:29 AM I probably should have taken the picture in better lighting, not sure why the wood grain goes different but the wood was rough sawn and i planned it down before using OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Dan Posted Sunday at 01:47 AM Report Posted Sunday at 01:47 AM BTW,this is probably the only place someone will ask for a close-up of your crack. Roberta Moreton, TAIrving, OCtoolguy and 6 others 1 8 Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted Sunday at 04:03 AM Report Posted Sunday at 04:03 AM gets some glue in there and use slurry of sanding dust. OCtoolguy, wagner1958 and BadBob 3 Quote

poupster2 Posted Sunday at 03:21 PM Report Posted Sunday at 03:21 PM I would suggest some CA glue. This happens to me often and CA is the best way to keep the crack from spreading. The CA glue is typically transparent so after it sets, you just have to sand and then the crack will be secured! The crack will not disappear but it will not spread. Hope this helps! wagner1958, OCtoolguy and Norm Fengstad 3 Quote
Roberta Moreton Posted Monday at 07:16 PM Report Posted Monday at 07:16 PM I would CA glue it from the back. It won’t crack more and won’t show. wagner1958 1 Quote
NC Scroller Posted Tuesday at 12:30 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 12:30 PM Looks like the wood split due to continuous movement due to humidity. Wood does that. Glue on a backer piece and it will stabilize it and prevent further damage. Only you will know that there is/was a split. wagner1958 1 Quote
wagner1958 Posted 14 hours ago Author Report Posted 14 hours ago To everyone I want to say thanks for great advice, I ended up making a slurry out of sawdust and glue. You can still slightly see it on the one side and very little on the other side. I am not sure which side I now want as my front side .it is far from finished but wanted to give an update on what I ended up doing. Quote
Hudson River Rick Posted 13 hours ago Report Posted 13 hours ago @wagner1958 It looks to me that you repaired the area with your self made slurry. Remembr only you will see the crack and after sometime even you will have to look for it. GREAT JOB, thanks for sharing. Rick wagner1958 1 Quote
