kmmcrafts Posted Friday at 07:01 PM Report Posted Friday at 07:01 PM (edited) So this is something I've been messing with on my laser cutter but I don't see any reason someone couldn't do this with a scroll saw.. though you'd probably need to be a pretty good with the scroll saw to make it work correctly. Look at how you can cut several lines into this 1/8" BBply and then you can bend it right around a corner. When I first run across this type of work I thought no way that really works so I had to purchase a laser file ( also comes in a printable PDF for those wondering ).. so the design could be printed and cut on a scroll saw. The designer has many different things like clutch purses etc.. I'm not sure how the designer quality of the particular person I purchased this design is as I'm having fitment issues so they are sort of working with me on a fitment flaw of their design. For clarification the design comes made for several different thickness of plywood and they designed this maybe they tested with 1/4" but the 1/8" version is off I don't know but the one I used is not correct to work right.. hopefully they'll fix the pattern and make it right with me.. But anyway back to my point of this bending right around the pretty sharp curve by just cutting several relief cuts.. I've not seen anyone doing this sort of thing with a scroll saw.. I may have to try it on on the scroll saw just to see if I could do it. Btw: This is a card box if you didn’t figure that out. Edit: Guess I should have uploaded the pictures. Wichman Posted Friday at 09:49 PM Report Posted Friday at 09:49 PM You need to make one, fill it with cookies, take a picture of it and caption the picture; "come to the dark side, we have cookies" This is a cross over between the burnt edges of the laser cut and the dark side of the Sith. kmmcrafts 1 Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted yesterday at 01:31 AM Report Posted yesterday at 01:31 AM (edited) Relief cutting or kerf cutting, is done all the time in woodworking world. Many times moldings need to be bent or shapes need veneering and that is done with tablesaw or bandsaw blade cuts. Nothing new. There are many people that do what you show. I see them all the time on etsy. . There is one guy who does all kinds of stuff making projects. From trains to purses to boxes. But have fun and no that is not a new idea. been around for many years. https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=relief+cutting+to+bend+wood&mid=5A0D25961D9E5940A4345A0D25961D9E5940A434&FORM=VIRE Edited yesterday at 02:29 AM by JTTHECLOCKMAN Quote

Do this from time to time with metal work but metal doesn't break like wood either. I've never seen anyone doing this with scroll work.. I know it'd be a pain in the behind to do but it'd give the piece that much more wow factor in my opinion if scrollers did this sort of thing. Quote

We build boxes with thicker materials and can cut any shape we want. It would be alot of work scrolling those kerfs and not worth the effort. You won't get the money for the extra time because no one will see how that is done. Laser you sit back and watch the machine do the work. You would always have to use a plywood because hardwoods will be difficult to bend in those radius Maybe get away with bendy plywood. https://www.bord.com.au/products/bending-plywood-bendy-ply kmmcrafts 1 Quote

Wichman Posted yesterday at 10:20 AM Report Posted yesterday at 10:20 AM While it would be fairly simple to make a jig for the cutting of the slots; spiral blades, an oversized auxiliary table, a fence rigged at an angle across the table, and square dowels (as many as needed) the width that matches the pattern and an adjustable stop system for the length of the slot(s) to be cut. But cutting one of these would be mind numbingly boring (for me). I made a fence for my Hegner several years ago to prove ( pictures ) a point, so I know it can be done. kmmcrafts 1 Quote
BadBob Posted yesterday at 12:04 PM Report Posted yesterday at 12:04 PM I occasionally see boxes cut with a similar pattern used for padding in shipping, usually for heavy items. Obviously, they have some machine to cut up used boxes. I can easily wad it up. Quote

I have built and sold a bendy guy. I tried to change the face to a santa face last Christmas. Didn't like the look of the face I did. I have seen someone do Steve's pattern and then created a banner for the floppy guy to hold. It was very cute. Quote

He also sells the patterns. Just something about the look of tan wood with dark brown edges and burn marks does nothing for me. You definitely know it is laser cut. Always thought the train was different. Because I like trains I guess. Not my cup of tea. Quote
Roberta Moreton Posted 23 hours ago Report Posted 23 hours ago Steve Good has a “Living Hinge Box”. The box walls are cut so it bends to make it a round box. I guess that’s what the design is called. kmmcrafts and barb.j.enders 1 1 Quote
