Dan Posted May 21, 2013 Report Posted May 21, 2013 (edited) ...Arrowheads. I had some small pieces of spalted maple sitting around and couldn't toss them so I made some arrowheads. It took about 30 minutes to cut, shape, and apply the finish on all 8 of these. They are 2" and 2-1/2" long. I think I'll make a bunch more from other types of wood and put them in a $1 box at the next craft show. I'll also give them away to the kids that behave while visiting the booth. Travis Posted May 27, 2013 Report Posted May 27, 2013 Great idea for a cheap item at a craft show. Plus, they're really cool looking. Those will fly off the shelves. Quote

Dan Posted March 26, 2014 Author Report Posted March 26, 2014 Larry, I give these away at shows. I've made about 50 and when the kids are eyeing them, with parent approval, I give them to the kids. I wonder how many of them came back for seconds...or thirds. Oh well, I just like seeing their face light up. I have thought about making necklaces. If I do, I'll make some smaller ones and make earrings for sale, too. So much to do and so little time. Dan, how did your arrowheads do at the show? They look great. Also, have you made more? Cut the shape, a little grinding and sanding, put on a finish. Not much to it, but I'd be interested in hearing your process. Thank you. Larry Quote
Dan Posted March 26, 2014 Author Report Posted March 26, 2014 Larry, you just described my process. I stack 3 and cut, take them to the belt sander to shape, then dip in BLO. patrol681 Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 The arrow heads are a really neat item, you did a great job Dan. Now I know this has gotta sound like a dumb question, and I have seen real arrow heads like these in museums, but I always wondered, with the notches being in the position that they are, how did they attach them to the shafts? Ed Quote
spirithorse Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 Hi, Ed, The end of the arrow shaft is slotted, the arrow head put into the slot, and then animal sinew was wrapped around the shaft around the shaft, arrowhead and between the notches you mentioned on the arrow head. Images can be seen here of Primitive Arrow heads such as the native Americans used. https://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A0LEVwtmdEBTnwoA8gNXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTB0Yjkwb3VoBHNlYwNzYwRjb2xvA2JmMQR2dGlkA1ZJUDM3MF8x?_adv_prop=image&fr=yfp-t-244-s&va=primitive+arrows God Bless! LarryEA Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 Spirithorse, interesting information and thanks for the link. Larry Quote
patrol681 Posted April 6, 2014 Report Posted April 6, 2014 Thanks Spirithorse for that very helpful answer. I never thought it would be done that way, because I didn't visualize a slot in the end of the shaft. It is quite a logical way of doing it, when you think about it, and the pictures you sent explain it very well. Just goes to show, you are never too old to learn. Ed Quote
