tvman44
Talking about belt sanders, you guys that have one "do you leave the tension on the belt sander when not using or do you do like me and release tension and then have to set up again every time you want to use it?" Some times I think I may be wasting a lot of time, tensioning and releasing.
WolfmoonCT
I have a belt sander, and never use it.. Haven't used it in so long, the one time I tried to, the glue on the belts was rotten, and the belts kept coming unglued. can't even use it now. Jim Finn
I have a hand held belt sander that I almost never use. I have a stationary belt sander that is the most used tool in my shop. It is a Harbor freight 6" x 48" and works very well for me. I keep it and my band saw under tension. I use both of these tools every day. Lucky2
Bob, for my sanders I always leave them tensioned, I've got three belt sanders and a couple of handheld power sanders that use a narrow 1/2" belt plus my orbital sander converts to a belt sander and I've never had a problem with any of the belts. None of the belts have ever let go or separated, and there's no need to worry about the belts taking the shape of the rollers while sitting there. The moment you turn on the sander it will rotate the belt fast enough to let it work properly. If I were to release the tension on the sanders, I'd be forever forgetting to put the belt back under tension before hitting the on switch. The only power tool that I release the tension on after using it, is the Band saw, and I often forget to reapply the tension before using the saw. That is always a bit exciting to say the least, but luckily, I've never ruined any blades or did any damage to the saw.<br />Len
amazingkevin
My belt sander is a harbor freight 6" x 36" I found out the hard way it has cheap plastic rollers and if you teave the tension on the rollers get egg shaped and cause a lot of vibration, also the belt tension broke so I just wedge a piece of wood I the right place and it still works good.
