DonR Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Completed cutting this one today as a request from my wife who is an organizer for a political party here in Tennessee. It is from a photograph of Byrds Creek Dam in Crossville TN and is a sort of iconic local view. I plan on framing it with maple or oak tobacco sticks The cuttings are to be donated as a door prize for their annual picnic. The problem is, I am not 100% sure that I like it or what color the backer should be. I have tried both black and blue and have attached pictures. What do you think? Comments pro and con are encouraged. Thanks Don R Quote
Clayton717 Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 The cutting looks great. I like the black background better. Quote
jrpeteo Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 I'm almost always a fan of black background. Nice cutting Don and pattern. Pete Quote
multitom Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Don,I am with Pete on this, the black looks very good as it brings out the cutting . Quote
DWSUDEKUM Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Great job. I am like the others partial to the black background. Thanks for sharing it with us. DW Quote
lawson56 Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 I agree the Black seems to work best.It makes the Dam show up better. Quote
keefie Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Yet another vote for ths black backing here, both look nice but I think the black works a bit better.either way, it's a very nice piece of cutting there. Keith. Quote
frankorona Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Great job, personally I like the color black as a backup. Quote
smitty0312 Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Great job! I would have to stand back and look at it to tell for sure what color I like best, kinda hard to tell in pic. for me. Quote
bobscroll Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Great job Don, I think the black looks right to me, Thanks for showing, Bob Quote
wombatie Posted July 10, 2013 Report Posted July 10, 2013 Black makes it pop a bit more. Well cut. Marg Quote
gator Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 go black and dont go back, wait i like the black background, nice job as usual Quote
penquin Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Got to agree with everyone the black looks better I think. What might be part of the problem is the cut may be to busy with both the original bridge and the reflection it is hard to see where one stops and the other begins. I think you did a great job on both the pattern and the cutting but there are a lot of cuts in it. Just my thoughts on it. Do like it a lot. thanks jim penquin Quote
amazingkevin Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 why can't I chose gray? yes i'm blond! lol Quote
OutoftheWoodwork Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 Beautiful cutting, Don! I just did a search on Google for it... Nice bridge! Have you considered putting the backing as water? Print out a photo of water, and put behind it to see how it looks. If that doesn't look right, then I would go with a darker blue or black. Black is always used, and I don't like to take the beaten path, per say. But the blue you used is too bright, and should be darker, if you go with that one. just my opinion, of course. Barb Quote
DonR Posted July 12, 2013 Author Report Posted July 12, 2013 Thanks for all of the comments and opinions they are appreciated. Barb, good idea to use a photo of water, I had never thought of that. I used black on two of them and brown on the third, then framed them using tobacco sticks for the rustic look. Here is how they came out. Over all I think I am pleased with the results. I may go back and try Barb's water idea. Don R Quote
sullyscroller Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 Don great cut and black works 99% of the time. On the last three pics is the middle frame poplar? would look awesume framed in black walnut !!!! Just my 2 cents worth. sully Quote

Barb Ok Barb he asked a simple question black or blue RU blonde ???? Just kidding ok love the fresh ideas you have. I've experimented on some water cuttings useing blue and black for water and sky but it's more time consuming to do it that way. sully Quote

OutoftheWoodwork Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 lol Sully As a matter of fact, not only am I blonde, but I'm a Polack to boot... how's that one? LOL I never go with A or B. I always find a C, D, or sometimes E to go with. It drives my husband absolutely insane when I do that, but my mind is always "creating" and seeing different avenues for what's been placed in front of me. It's a rare scenario when I accept just what's placed in front of me as a choice lol I always modify in some way shape or form lol Sorry Sully. You'll either get used to it, or block me, one lol (the other half just puts up his hands any more lol) Quote
Furkid_aus Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 All are great Don and I like a black background Quote
