nrscroller
Hi In referance to 2 peoples comments on the post I did about my shop remodel, what thickness osb should I use for the walls. I had that once a long time ago and it worked, I never painted it. I guess I could paint it this time to make shop brighter. I like the idea of doing that rather than sheetrock, as they said you can put a nail anywhere then. Also do I run the 4 x8 sheets up/down or sideways on the walls. I am kinda green at carpentry. But I am a great scroller!! Thanks Bill Edited August 2, 2013 by nrscroller sullyscroller
sullyscroller
I would use 1/2" . As far as how to hang it i would run it up and down on the walls. if you do it sideways you would need to add nailers 4' up to secure the horizontal seam between sheets,if you don't over time it can warp. Also if you paint them go with a semi or gloss paint to make cleaning easier. Flat paint is cheaper but holds dust like a magnet. Hope this helps. sully Huntter2022
PawPawRay
I used 5/8 thick osb on mine with R13 insulation behind it and it dropped my inside temp on hot days from in the 100's down to the 80's. I didn't bother to paint mine. I think the wood look is appropriate for a workshop
MrsN
My husband just put 1/2 in the garage (I can't remember if it was an OSB or a ply) He went with 1/2 because it matched with the 1/2 sheetrock that was used in other places. He wanted to replace some parts with wood but left other parts sheetrock. I think painting it is worth the work, the light reflection really improves the shop. sullyscroller
sullyscroller
Katie is right on the light. painting them white or an off white will make it brighter sully
amazingkevin
Lots of insulation then you can make noise when ever you want and not disturb anyone, also with lots of insulation the heat ao cool stays there.
heppnerguy
I too have very little carpentry skills and I do not know that it really matters how thick the osb boards are. I being older, would probably use the 1/2 inch because it is lighter to handle and hence, easier on my back as I packed it around, besides that, it would be cheaper too. I used it to divide my garage into 2 single car spaces, I did paint the divider wall white to match the rest of the existing walls and it does provide for more light refraction, as Mrs N said. Good luck on whatever you decide, I do not see how you could go wrong, either way.
Lucky2
Around here we use 7/16" on garage interiors, basement walls, and workshops. Len
