nrscroller Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 I tried making one of the ribbon ornaments from the christmas creative crafts and ww magazine and they said they used 3/4 pine. I just grabbed a piece of 1/4 and it was like cutting concrete. Do I need to use clear white pine or what. They are really pretty when they are done but man that really was hard to cut when I am so used 1/8 bb plywood. Also blade suggestions for pine that thick. Thanks Bill Quote
MrsN Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 When I cut something from pine I always go to Menards and buy their best pine. I think it is the black label? It costs a bit more then the lesser grades but usually a 6' piece lasts me several projects. I find that it cuts really nicely. Quote
scrimper Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 There are lot's of different types of pine and some people refer to many softwoods as pine (in the UK anyway) for example European redwood (pine) is very oily but not very hard and cuts well on a fretsaw whereas spruce (used a lot in the UK and often called pine!) is dry and easy to cut though it does have resin pockets which cause problems and ruin your work. On the other hand Pitch pine is rock hard, in fact a lot harder than many hardwood's and more difficult to cut than oak! Quote
Kepy Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 There are a variety of different pines. I have found that Eastern white pine is the best for scroll saw work. The best that I ever got came from New Jersey. Quote
Jim Finn Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 Many refer to a common 2x6 as pine when it is actually fir. Sugar pine, if you can find it, is a dream to work with. Southern yellow pine is as hard as oak. Quote
amazingkevin Posted August 30, 2013 Report Posted August 30, 2013 I'm wondering if white wood is a pine I know it cuts very easy.i get it from the big box stores. Quote
