WolfmoonCT
So I've got all the stuff scrolled out, the back piece is painted, and all the letters and stuff are painted. I did some testing, and if I try to use a nail gun to hold the letters to the sign, they will just split. I was thinking Gorilla glue, but that expands, and I'm sure will expand out from under the letters.. Any suggestions? My next thought is epoxy.. Phantom Scroller
My outdoor sign I used standard waterproof wood glue and had no issues with the letters dropping off YET! . Roly
WolfmoonCT
Didn't think the wood glue would stick to painted wood.. I have some TBIII that I used to glue up the back panel. Edited October 10, 2013 by WolfmoonCT
Phantom Scroller
Didn't think the wood glue would stick to painted wood.. I have some TBIII that I used to glue up the back panel. Well I did put five coats of yacht vanish on then glued letters on and that worked, I think it would stick to paint try a sample piece first. Travis
I'd use liquid nails. That stuff works on everything.
Dan
I used TBIII on an outdoor sign. The backing was painted wood. I then put several coats of spar varnish on it. I made the sign 7 years ago and it's still holding up. Shoot, the wind blew it down once and it banged on the concrete. So I think TBIII will work. WolfmoonCT
Awesome. I'll use TBIII. I don't have any liquid nails Travis, and I don't think I can keep the stuff from squeezing out all over the letters.

rjR
I have used a good quality exterior wood glue and had it hold painted wood. That was even through some ND winters. If you are nervous about it, just predrill and use small screws also, bury them fill over and spot paint etc, or if possible run them from the back side -- almost , but not quite through. heppnerguy
glad you asked, Roly.. I was wondering the same thing...didn't really want to ask and look stupid but my not asking wouldn't fool anyone about me anyway. I have been here long enough that everyone already knows me too well to hide something like that about myself. thanks for asking anyway. amazingkevin
are you using a pin nail gun ,these are very thin pin nails and I don't think they will split the wood .that's what I used on a sign I did with no glue 3" letters too. WolfmoonCT
Don't have a pin nailer. I do have an 18ga brad nailer, and it split the test letters.. the white cedar is very soft and splits easily from what I saw.
