heppnerguy
I decided to take a pattern and request and see what I might be able to do with it. I got as far as my drawing indicates but do not know how to go from here. I am not trying to submit a pattern to the request because I understand that I do not have a much of an idea as to how to make a pattern. I want to learn so I am just making an effort to do so. What i really need at this point is maybe an explanation of the next steps and maybe an example, (working from what I have done so far). I think the way to learn if through trial and error. Any help here would be appreciated. Dick heppnerguy
sullyscroller
Dick, in order to help first we need to know what program you are using ? Gimp , Inkscape, or another program. Also whether you want this to be a line drawing or more detailed fretwork style. We're here to help with a lot of different ways to do this. The one you posted does have some major floaters but those can be fixed with little effort. sully
amazingkevin
Man if I could get off the ground even that far would inspire me to go on! looks great so far heppnerguy!
Dan
Dick, I think you are on track. Keep adding the details then start looking for floaters and islands. If you want to covert it to a vector drawing it's easy to do once you have the pattern completed as a jpg.
heppnerguy
Thanks guys for looking and for your help.. I just do not know how to proceed here.. I need to do the wheels, and I am not sure how to do the fill ins like what I have on the ground and grill of the car., if I create islands and floaters, I am using Inkscape for my pattern making program... I will check back tomorrow and see what happens here. Dick heppnerguy
Travis
What kind of pattern are you trying to make? Is it a portrait style pattern (with the deep shadows), or is it a freestanding cutout? That will let us know what you're trying to create. A portrait style pattern, Inkscape isn't a good way to go. For that, I'd use GIMP. If it's a freestanding pattern or plaque, you're off to a good start. amazingkevin
heppnerguy
Travis, I guess I do not understand your question. I posted the car photo and pattern attempt that I have made. I guess you would call it a plaque type pattern. What i do not like about the GIMP programs is the fact that it is not a vector programs and I like the straight lines for cutting. I do understand about the GIMP portrait pattern advantage and I purchased your CD's right after I became a member here, I need to take the time to really go through them again, because portraits is my real interest. But for right now I am concentrating on the simple patterns so I can learn those too. Did you get my ornament patterns, I sent to you ? these were difficult for me, not to make, but rather just to think up. Thank you for you inquiry, I hope I understood what you are asking of me. sullyscroller
Dick I use gimp for all my patterns and use Inkscape for cleaning them up. I start by getting it to grayscale up on colors - then i go to filters and artistic/photocopy where i adjust the sliders for the best resolution. From there i mainly use the pencil to add or remove area's i want and then the bucket fill set to black to check for floaters. Hope this helps. sully bobscroll
heppnerguy
I am now reviewing the GIMP tutorials that Travis made and posted here. It has been awhile since I have used GIMP and a refresher will be very helpful for me. I will let everyone know if I 'get it'. I am a pretty slow learner but eventually It seems to sink in to my thick skull. Dick heppnerguy

Dick heppnerguy PS it might not be what others would accept but I am starting my pattern making and I am Okay with it. olds 1.svg
heppnerguy
Sorry about the previous post I inadvertently posted the photo that was a copy of the one I posted that was causing me the confusion in the first place. I tried to edit it and delete it, but with no success. I will now re-post the one I have attempted to do yesterday. bobscroll
Dick your getting there, That's looking alright, I haven't tried doing that type of pattern myself, Thanks for showing, Bob
heppnerguy
I took another look at my pattern and discovered a couple of floaters that would be added to make this a cut able pattern. One for the grill and one for the bottom shadowing area and one for the back bumper, otherwise I think it is one that could be cut if one wanted to. Thanks Bob for the encouragement Dick heppnerguy
