Sparkey
Just curious if you all buy your wood local or on line. I have a Woodcraft close and for 1/4" x4" x 30" piece it's anywhere from $18 to $28. Does that sound about right. amazingkevin
jrpeteo
Not sure if you're talking hardwood or plywood, but 1/4" x 4" x 24" is all under $4 here ( for most woods)..... Plus shipping, of course. I have had nothing but good luck buying from them. amazingkevin
Buying wood for me is like pulling hens teeth That would be nice to do, And cutting wood that's not warped would be a delight also. The thousands of projects I;ve done was from found wood. I could see my self holding the new wood ,smelling it rubbing it ,ah the joys of fresh wood to cut. Some of my cheapy customers tell me but you got the wood for free. When the price is said. I should reach down and get another piece just like the one I cut and say here cut your own, but I can't be mean like them ,lol.1/4"x27"x 34" is free for me ,just got to find a dresser someone thru out, lol
heppnerguy
most wood for me is quite expensive. I do get a pretty fair price on plywood but that is about it. I bought so underlayments at home depoe for $28 a sheet. It is good on one side and I usually can get my with it on a 2 sided piece as long as I do a good sanding job. That is a 4 X 8 foot sheet so I get a lot of things out of it. it makes good backer boards too. Not my preferrence but I use it when I have nothing else. Other wise I have not found anything that seems like a deal to me. the shipping raises the cost by at least 50%. Always looking though Dick heppnerguy

browders
Here in the great mountain west, our trees are all the wrong type. Like kevin, I tend to scrounge for my stock. The local Habitat for Humanity Re-store is a pretty good source. Also garage sales where people are getting rid of old furniture. I've even used old pallet material. Depending on what was on it, they oftentimes use oak for the boards.
LarryEA
First, Sparkey you can't be paying $18 to $28 for a piece of wood that is 1/4 inch x 4 inch x 30 inch ... there has to be a mis-type somewhere. Geeze, I could stick that piece of wood down my pant leg and walk around about like I do now. OK, Ya'll, try this. (Maybe some of you have). * Yellow Pages Look under ( wood, carpentry, home building, sawmills, cabinet makers ) Contact them, these business always have scrap to give away or sell. * Craigs List... Do a " Wanted: Scrap Wood " along with whats for sale. * Picture Framers sometimes throw away scratched, chipped framing wood. * Old Barns. fallen down ... . Stop and ask. * Invest in a 'Business Card' that INDICATES you want scrap wood. Then tack these up at HOT SPOTS. Just my thoughts.
LarryEA
At a craft show two weeks ago, had a guy ask me if I wanted to buy wood. His basement is full of 'good' scrap Oak, Maple & Cherry pieces from his cabinet making. Variety of sizes. In his garage, he has 5000 board feet of lumber stacked in the rafters he wants to sell. He just wants to get rid of it. He is located near Binghamton, New York USA. I'll give you his phone number if you are interested talking to him. Of course I'd ask him if it was OK first. I bought some luaun 1/8" Oak and Cherry from him and may go get somemore. I don't n-e-e-d wood but I still will take some if it is a good deal. Rare or hard to get wood I'll take in a heart beat. The one type wood I want is the pieces that still have the bark on both the top and bottom

Clayton717
I buy all my wood locally. That is high for that size of board. If you have a way buy a 3/4" or 1" board and resaw it yourself. It will save money and get more pieces.
Ron Johnson
Good morning Sparkey I prefer using only hardwoods, especially the exotic. Where I live there is only one supplier that carries what I like and I don't mind paying the price being I am very particular in regards to the end result. I also have purchased or acquired wood that has been aged for many years such as poplar, cedar, mountain ash, maple and etc. usually at a decent price. I'll also watch when old buildings are being torn down, and check flea markets, salvage places and such. As long as what I purchase, beg for or be given and I know the end result will turn out to my liking then the whole process of completing the project is enjoyable and rewarding. Sparkey
Well I ordered some wood from Ocooch Hardwoods in JR' link. The prices look really good and the shipping was reasonable. I bought 2 boards 6" x 3/4" x24" and five boards 4" x3/4" x 24" and it came to $30 plus $11 shipping. I got a mixture of different hardwoods will have enough to do the two projects I have planned and have a lot left over. jrpeteo
Travis
I have another website called Wood Deals Online. Basically, it tracks down all the wood on eBay and categorizes it by species and characteristics. I've bought from there a couple of times and had good results. I'm working on porting over the code to SSV so we can have it here too.
Jim Finn
I buy my wood locally. Well kind of. I drive 5 hours east twice a year to get the cedar. It is 1"x 8"x96" for under $13. I buy about $700 of it at a time. I re-saw and plane it to 3/8". I do not do fretwork. Mostly I inlay maple into cedar box lids.

bandaideman
I usually get it from folks who ask do you want some wood. My dad always said if its free take it. I have gotten cut offs from Cabinet shops, recently I got a few 1x4-6 up to 12 foot free. I have a planner and band saw which helps with getting to size. He also had some large slabs with bark. Not sure what I will do with those yet but as dad said if it is free take it. I go to the local Rockler here and they will have cut off oak, walnut other species every once in a while a dollar a board. I recently had a student I precept and her grandfather works at a lumber mill I have been to once and he sent a bunch of cut offs. Also I never turn down old furniture that is broken. Even at work the were remodeling and throughing 2 inch solid Oak out in the dumpster some pieces 6-8 foot long and 6-8 inches wide. So I guess just keep your eyes open and don't be afraid to ask. Just don't beg without crying LOL
