Hello! I'm new to scrolling. I must say I was a little intimidated by what seems to be a group of people who have been scrolling for a long time but I enjoy reading your posts and figured I would jump in somewhere! I retired last October from the Marine Corps and my husband suggested I may enjoy a scroll saw and he was right! Love it! Here is my first piece :) can't wait to start another project!

Welcome Antonia, just watch out for the pile of sawdust at the door. If you need help, all you need to do is shout, mind you, you will have to shout LOUDLY as I live in Scotland. You will find all manner of things here and most importantly you will make many friends just as I have done.

You will also have to be an expert at making coffee and tea. I have been in the woodworking trade for over 40 years, now retired but I'm still learning. So come on in and enjoy yourself.

Rob Roy.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm a sweet tea drinker having converted from being a New York City slicker to settling in the South as also could drink coffee non stop all day long without losing sleep...a trait I guess comes from the a Marine Corps for sure! Haha Larry yes my upload didn't quite work for me but I do have a great sense of humor which is actually what made me join right in! You all seem great and easy going! Ok here it is...

Antonia,

I want you to know that you are not the only 'beginner' here. Several of our new members are just starting out too. Please feel free to check out the pattern library and they are all free to download. In fact roam all over this sight and check out all of it. there are some great tutorials here that will help you to  learn a lot. Our 'chief cook and bottle washer' (Travis), as he likes to call himself, has made several tutorials that are in the 'university' tab in the forum. My suggestion would be to log on here often and you will soon feel like you know the regulars here and you will find them to be helpful and friendly. As you saw from Marg's post and most of the other posts, we are an international family.

What kind of saw and blades are you using ? If you continue to challenge your abilities but don't pick anything way too advanced for you, then you will enjoy our sawing efforts and not get discouraged. Have fun and a big WELCOME to you. We are all glad that you have found us.

I am using a craftsman 16 inch scroll saw. As for the blades hmmm. I have the ones that came with it and I bought some Bosch blades 18.5 TPI??? If that helps any. Thanks again for the welcomes. I really have enjoyed reading and admiring all the fabulous pieces on this forum. One day when I grow up...:)

I like your first cut. It's a keeper!

Your blades are standard Sears blades. I have those blades.

Depending on what you cut, you may want a wider selection of blades.

I think I will put out a new post asking " Blades for a new scroller "

Look for it.

I HAVE BEEN SCROLLING ON AND OFF FOR THE LAT 20 YEARS. WHEN YOU START WITHA CUT START ON A STREIGHT LINE FIRST IF POSSIBLE AND THE MOST NOTICED MISTAKES ARE ON A CURVE OR CIRCLE, YOU GET THEM AND ANY THING ELSE CAN BE FIXED. THIS IS NOT AS HARD AS SOME PEOPLE THINK IT IS WITH A LITTLE PRACTICE YOU WILL BE OK.   BILL

Hi Antonia, welcome to the village Indeed a lovely piece that rose you'll treasure it for a long time, I've scrolled for a long time and still have pieces in my house I did 30 years ago. Hang in there and enjoy what you do but be really careful Scrolling isn't a hobby its an addiction and there is no cure. Have fun with it. My name is Hans and I live in Mexico
