Hey everybody!

I have been scrolling since 2003 and I have made dozens of projects during that time. Right now I am trying to tackle the Dome Clock. Although at time I swear that it is trying to tackle me  . Even with my experience, I feel like I'm still a novice beginner, especially after seeing some of the works of art that you guys have created. So I look forward to meeting some of you and expanding my horizons.

Welcome to the village Aaron. I am AL from Tennessee.  I have been wanting to tackle the dome clock but never got around to ordering the pattern.  I would love to see some pictures of it when you get it finished or better yet show us some in-progress pics when you get a chance.

Any questions?  Just ask, there is a lot of talent here and your question or request will be answered.  AL

Thanks for all of the great welcomes.

I got into woodworking because my wife's grandfather was a master wood carver. The things that he made out of wood was just amazing. Unfortunately I never got to meet him. He passed away about 5 years before I met my wife. He only had daughters so my mother in law inherited all of his tools. She was never one to enjoy the process of woodworking so she just kept the tools in her garage. I then came along and found that all of the tools were just rusting away. So after several months of restoration, I was able to get the tools in good working order. Most of them are Craftsman and were made from the 1950's to the 1980's. After i got them all in working order my mother in law decided that it would be better if I had them at my house rather than letting them rust up again. Then one day I was going through a woodworking catalog and saw some scroll work. I was intrigued because I have always loved to draw and the way I saw it, I could use a scroll saw and "draw" by cutting wood. So I got a cheap scroll saw because I did not want to invest a bunch of money and find out I did not enjoy it. That first saw lasted a whole 14 months before it was completely wore out. Then I got a nicer Craftsman.  I know that they are not the greatest scroll saw but it has for a decade and I have yet to make a single repair on it. I started making all kinds of stuff and more often than not, what ever I was working on was sold before I got half way done with it. Then I had to take some time away from the saw for health reasons. It ended up being about a year of not making any sawdust and now I'm back at using the saw for health reasons, go figure.

I decided to make a dome clock because my family does not have any heirlooms and I want to change that. I am very proud of my family history and I want to do my part in enriching that history. So I plan on adding a small compartment to the back of the dome clock and inside that compartment will be some photos of me making the clock and then I want to make a list. The list will contain all of the people that the clock passes down to and when they received. I'm making it out of solid oak because I want it to stand the test of time. No plywood will be used at all. I know that some of you may think that all of this is odd, but I have known for a long time that I am a total nut and I'm happy with that.  I'm still at the beginning stage so it would be easy at this point to start a build journal on it.

As for my workshop, lets just say that I am thankful for any room I have. I get 1/3 of a 10 X 20 single car garage and inside that space I have a band saw, work bench, scroll saw, table saw, drill press, lathe, hand tools, and  wood storage. As my daughter says "You get what you get and don't throw a fit!"

Welcome to the village Aaron! I am Danny from Nebraska.

You are going to fit in just fine around here. I am sure your family will receive many handmade gifts thru the coming years and will cherish them for generations.

When you get your clock finished I would invite you to go for an intarsia project or two or three or more. Also try some double bevel inlay. Jim Finn is the master of that as you have probably seen looking thru the forum. Do a search on the subject and he will teach you how to do it if you haven’t already. With your artistic skills I will be looking forward to seeing many pictures of a lot of wonderful projects.

Welcome Aaron. I enjoyed reading your post. I was just saying that I would like to know a little

more about our active members. Here you come along and give a little history.

Yes there is talent here and it looks like that talent just grew a little.

Touring the village and participating is enjoyable.

Be sure to stop in the Coffee House, you can make us your favorite treats if you want.

Hey, I'll bet you don't have the smallest shop.

Amazing Kevin may have the biggest, he scrolls outside :lol

Aaron,

I am happy to see that you found this sight. If you have not already noticed you will soon see that there are many people from all over this planet. Also there is a lot of talented people and a few of us that just love to spend time making sawdust. I hope that you have wondered around in The Village and discovered a lot of things exsist everywhere you look. there are pattern classes in the University forum, where our knowledgable leader has done a marverlous job walking many people through his classes. You will soon discover that some people seem to specialize in making certain things and are the specialist in what they do here. The important thing is that you come back often and get aquainted. You will soon discover that you have made many  new friends and have, in the process, became a memeber of our big family too.

Interested dto see how your clock comes along.

Again thanks for the welcome.

This weekend I plan on spending some time making some saw dust. I plan on taking some pics of the dome clock and start a build thread for it. It is a huge project and will take a while to complete it. When I can I will be sneaking around with some secret sawdust. Next month is my anniversary so I am going to make something for my wife with out her finding out about it. That will be an adventure! The day after my anniversary is my mother in laws birthday. I am going to make something for her. It will be easier to keep her from finding out about it because she does go to her home and to work from time to time.

For my mother in law I plan on making one of the religious plaques from the pattern library and for my wife I'm using bits and pieces of other patterns to make a custom one. I'm doing this because most of my computer time is on my work computer and on it I'm limited to MS Paint and have not really figured out how to make a pattern with it yet.
