vykus Posted May 14, 2014 Report Posted May 14, 2014 I have a project that has two pieces that will be glued together. Do I need to glue before I oil it or could I tape the parts that are going to be glued and then rub the oil on? How do you do it? Quote

Do I need to glue before I oil it or could I tape the parts that are going to be glued and then rub the oil on? How do you do it? Hi Matt I would say glue first. You could try taping on a piece of scrap but my worry would be the oil creeping under the tape. Hope this helps Matt. Rob Roy. Quote
Bendita Posted May 14, 2014 Report Posted May 14, 2014 Ditto I used to live in an area where we had a lot of oily wood so the trick was to machine the wood and glue it as fast as you could before the oil would come to the surface. Now I don't know where you live but there is a marine glue that available that will stick to any surface oily or not also Lee Valley in Canada had a glue for furniture repair that would work on oily surfaces Other than that I would say glue first then oil. Good luck Matt hope this will help somehow Quote
Dan Posted May 26, 2014 Report Posted May 26, 2014 I agree too. I did try gluing some cherry that was oiled and the wood glue didn't hold (duh). I later used gorilla glue and it seemed to hold well enough. But, I would make that a practice. Quote
amazingkevin Posted May 26, 2014 Report Posted May 26, 2014 I love using a pin nail gun, Quick easy and if you need to take it back apart no problem, instead of glueing. knotbob 1 Quote
Phantom Scroller Posted May 26, 2014 Report Posted May 26, 2014 I'll be honest with ya, I just don't bother about clearing oil or paint before gluing because the parts are so small there's not enough weight & pressure on them to break apart. If it is a large part then yes as it has more weight and easy to break apart. Just my opinion. Roly Quote
Lucky2 Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 Glue first, then oil if you want it to stay together. Len amazingkevin 1 Quote
