  1. This is a fairly straightforward pattern by Chris Messier. I first tried cutting it about a year ago and gave up after making a BIG GOOF part way through the job. Then, yesterday morning, when nearing completion on the second attempt, I broke off a big piece (that is pointed to with the orange arrow in the first attached photo). I was using a Flying Dutchman Reverse Tooth #1 blade and cutting 4mm thick Baltic Birch Plywood. I decided to start all over again right away but switched both blade and wood. This time I used a Flying Dutchman 2/0 Spiral blade and 6mm thick quarter sawn white oak veneer. I found it much easier using the spiral blade and cut the pattern in a little less than three hours. It was then mounted on another piece of the same material stained black. The whole thing was then sprayed with a couple of coats of gloss polyurethane. I'm going to be giving the completed work to my grandson (an avid fisherman) on his 15th birthday tomorrow.

  2. Made a few more trivets, south western dream catcher and magic golf ball holder this week. Golf season is coming soon in my neck of the woods, courses are open but we had lot's of rain and more to come so not too much fun to play so far. That's fine with me more time with my scroll saw.

    Mustang on the hook

My next older brother has a Mustang GT 5.0. Paul tried to get me to buy a Camero SS so we could have us a drag race. Keep in mind he is 75 and I am 72. Can't you just see the look on a cops face if he caught us? Anyway it didn't happen I like my Buick Enclave just fine. I'm into making toy cars and trucks and such so I made a tow truck and a Mustang. The pair are for a grand nephew which is also Paul's great grandson. I think Paul will get a kick out of the Mustang on a hook.

  9. This fretwork was found in First United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro, TN. From a distance, it looks like one piece, close up you can see how he put it together. I would love to see the saw he did this on. It could have been with a hand fretsaw, but I doubt it. I'm thinking early pedal powered model.

  15. I think I read in one of the other forum related to the upgrade. I think the answer was no. They cycle out by themselves. Found it: "I don't think you can delete them. I think they just cycle through now. So new notifications push off the old ones. When you click the Notification's button, you should see the newest ones at the top. Once you look, the pink button with the number should disappear. Let me know if that's not working for you."

    Dust collecting box.

This is what I devised to collect the sawdust under my Hegner. It doubles as a blade clamp catcher when I break a blade. I have a piece of hardware cloth in the bottom ahead of the bag to catch the clamp.

    Coin Inlay Variation

Still experimenting. Wanted to try to create some contrast for the gold (brass), and didn't have any "liver of sulphur" to create the patina, so I torched the Kennedy to oxidize it and turn it dark. When I put the seal on it, I think it may turn to a shiny black. Anyway, not sure if I like it yet, but it is always fun to experiment.

    New Sander

Finally got my new Flatmaster Sander this week, and got it assembled today. I can see many uses for it, from cleaning up the back of my Intarsia before putting the backing on, to sanding a scrollsaw piece to clean it up. Found today that it does a good job of cleaning up rough sawn lumber too. May not be perfectly even for thickness, but for Intarsia, that won't be an issue, as I sand everything when shaping. Took me about 12 passes to clean up some cedar on one side, but it beats having to pass on this less expensive lumber. This is similar to the Sand-Flee, but since I could never get anyone to answer questions from the company that sells the Sand-Flee, I opted for the Canadian version. Comes without motor, but that was no issue, as Harbor Freight sells a decent motor. Overall, the cost was still less than the sand-Flee and since the sander uses Velcro backed paper, it does not get hot, therefore no buildup on the paper, which translates to longer lasting paper.

    Not Impressed.

Marg have ALL the LED's gone out or just some of them? If all of them are out it is the driver board that takes the main and makes the voltage what the LED's can use. Almost always it is something simple like a blown transistor or capacitor, or even a fuse. If you have not checked yet, check the fuse. its the easiest thing to check, however it does not sound like it from your description. You might be able to order the driver board and replace it. DW

    Blade difference?

Hi Jim, Puzzle blades are extremely thin and are meant for using with 1/8" or 1/4" wood to make ultra tight turns with the narrowest gaps possible. You can use them for other intricate work also if you prefer. Compare the width of the Olsen Skip Tooth (page 2) size 3/0 blade which is the smallest they make, compared to the Flying Dutchman Superior Puzzle Blade. When cutting puzzles obviously the gap between pieces is very important. Whereas it's not as critical for every day intricate fretwork. If you enjoy cursing every time a blade snaps, you'll love puzzle blades. ;-) http://www2.woodcraft.com/PDF/Olson-scrollblade-chart.pdf http://www.scrollsawbladespatterns.com/puzzle_style.htm Iggy
