  2. A year ago in April, I donated about 40 of my kids dinosaur puzzles to the local elementary school. One of the teachers called a week later asking what other species I could cut. Reason she asked is that she was going to have a "dinosaur dig" in which her 1st graders would act as paleontologists and dig up "fossils" and my puzzles would be perfect for it. I was amazed at the idea, I thought it was fabulous. I gladly made her 4 specific puzzles and a couple of weeks later she had her dig. I even went and spoke to the class and showed them an actual fossil I owned thanks to a paleontologist friend of mine. Well, today was Dinosaur Dig 2017, I was invited to attend again and what a fun time it was for me. Oh, and the kids too. :-) Just a real quick overview... This is a 1st grade class with about 25 children. There are 4 tables, each table has a bucket of sand with dinosaur "bones" buried in it. The children have tools that a paleontologist would use at a dig site and they begin to unearth fossils. They then have to clean them off, assemble them and then identify which species they found. Then in their log book they answer questions specific for that species. After they all finish, the bones are re-buried, the kids rotate to a new table and do it again until they've dug up all 4 species and written about them. I am so thrilled that my silly little puzzles have a practical and educational use. I look forward to supplying more "fossils" for years to come. Iggy

  7. I have done a lot of stuff over the years, some was good, so not sot so good, but here is a sample of my past work. I do no remember where most of the patterns came from, but the portrait is my wife's son. It was cut after his death. The Bucky memorial is based off of a pattern I found in the pattern library, made by Christina Scherl, and was made for a friend of a friend who's dog passed away. I am open to any and all comments, good and bad. Thanks for looking.

    Another trivet

Today I cut this trivet from an Islamic geometric design. Just for fun, here is the piece of reclaimed rimu I used. I know I should have cleaned it up first but I wanted to get cutting.... I was almost tempted to leave the old paint on one side but in the end sanded it off then dipped it in 50/50 BLO and applied a beeswax topcoat. Rob

    SSV changes

A couple things that are pretty neat about how Travis runs this place are: being responsive to the need to upgrade the forum and getting it done when it needs to be done. being sensitive to the needs of of SSV followers - keeping all of us in the loop from the get-go by advertising the changes, letting us know when they are going to occur, carrying them out in a timely manner, maintaining the look and feel of what we've been used to on SSV (as much as possible), seeking feedback on issues, responding to those issues quickly and ultimately shepherding the entire transition through in a way that made it as quick and pain-free as it might possibly be. He makes it look easy!! ...... (which I am sure it is not!!) .... Pretty hard to ask for anything else!!. Thanks!! Jay

    Please slow down

I wish all the other pattern designers would slow the heck down on making so many great patterns. I'm still trying to go through all the ones I got when I bought someone out last year and now every day another great pattern gets added to my pattern library from you all. Plus the designs I'm making. I will never get through them all. No actually thanks to all you designers that are still putting patterns out (free and pay) for us scrollers. With most everyone going to laser and cnc and now even 3d manufacturing. It's still not slowing down on awesome scroll saw patterns. Thanks again.

    Good Old Yellow Heart

Thanks to Russell "Birchbark" I was able to make this project for some school kids to give to there teacher. I used walnut & yellow heart with a blue paper between them. Cut with FDUR #5 & #3 blades also used FD #3 New Spiral. Finished with lacquer spray. Without people like Russell I wouldn't be able to do special orders like this. Thanks!

    Galloping Away

I am delivering the rocking horse this afternoon. Of course at the last minute; I thought of a gift for the little girl whose brother is getting the horse. So from layout to assembly was a rush job. It is made from about 3/8 pine and a firewood base. I spent about 1-1/2 hours total on it. The horses feet are pegged into the base with bamboo skewers, I have found that they do work well for this sort of thing. The base has very cheap felt feet put on it to remain scratch free. Deliberately left with no finish so she can paint it as she wishes I did a stack of 2 and made a template for more at the same time.

    My Hegner Modifications

By moving the upper arm stop the blade end of the upper arm went from 3 1/4" to 6" above the table. I know you don't do fretwork Jim but you can take my word for it moving that stop really does help especially on larger fretwork.
    1 point
  43. I have owned the Hegner 18v for 28 years and do mostly fretwork with it, I do not have a problem with bottom feeding but wish they would come out with a top feeder. This saw is a complete work horse and has held up over the years. As others have commented all of the parts are available but pricey which I have a problem with as I think it is taking advantage of Hegner owners. Example: bellows replacement part sells for close to $50.00 plus shipping for a molded plastic part. Mike

  44. I also agree with Al I have two Hegners I am always trying new and different things I do everything I can on my saws and I've come to the conclusion that the saws have a lot more ability than I do . Bill

  46. If this makes you happy, it is fine. If you think you might try the craft show circuit, you have to consider the cost involved. I have tried a consignment store. They charged me a monthly fee plus a percentage of my sale. I think what you are doing is great!
    1 point
  47. You are never going to get big money for your work from yard sales but if you are happy with that keep doing it. No one is having their arm twisted to buy your work and if you love what you do keep doing it. Marg

  48. Turner that's a great idea! Getting anything is better than getting nothing. I'm like Iguanadon. Keep doing what you're doing. People like it. People pay for it. And you enjoy doing it. It's a win for everybody.

    Dust collecting box.

I made this tray to go under my saw it collects all the sawdust & stops it falling into my lap.You could cut a hole in a corner to sweep the dust down but I found I can sweep it out using a small dust pan & brush. Cheers Peter
