    Thanks bobscroll

When i started building my model boats as a side business I figured I needed a logo. I did a lot of thinking and brainstorming and it always came back to a pattern I saw here on Scroll saw Village that I really liked. It was one by bobscroll of a dragon head. The boats are made of carbon fiber, and in the mythological world dragon skin or dragon scales are the strongest stuff around sooo.... I contacted him and asked if I could use his dragon head or a variation of it as part of my logo. He had no problem with it so I proceeded with designing it. Here is what we came up with. It looks pretty good. I just wanted to give him a shoutout and say thanks.

    Sawdust Cloud

Ugh, my ShopVac died a couple of days ago... as in burning smell, smoke in the air... I use it in conjunction with a Dust Deputy and it works GREAT. I didn't realize how much dust it was truly sucking up until I don't have it. Now I leave my cutting area and I'm covered head to toe with fine dust. Fortunately it was a heavy duty one with a good warranty and I emailed them yesterday. They replied today to let me know they're shipping me a replacement motor. Very cool. They didn't even ask for a receipt. Thank goodness since I didn't have it. I just bought it back in October. I have it hooked up to my foot pedal so that it comes on and off with my saw. I had wondered if that would be stressful on the motor and I guess the answer is yes. But, oh well, it works great and it'll be worth the money if I have to replace the vac every so often. Just another cost of doing business.

  7. I have done a lot of stuff over the years, some was good, so not sot so good, but here is a sample of my past work. I do no remember where most of the patterns came from, but the portrait is my wife's son. It was cut after his death. The Bucky memorial is based off of a pattern I found in the pattern library, made by Christina Scherl, and was made for a friend of a friend who's dog passed away. I am open to any and all comments, good and bad. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful puppy. I'm not real good at names. I've had a lot of dogs called different names, Heyyou, Get, Damnit, SOB, Steppedinitagain...... Just kidding. I'm a dog lover and my wife says I get along with dog, much better than I do people... probably true.

    Hegner auxiliary table

As some Hegner scroll saw owners are able to admit Hegner saws do have a few features that could be improved. I have found on some projects the table size would be more functional if it was larger especially wider. For me I have had some occasions where part of my project piece would drop off the side of the table and catch on the side preventing turning the piece until I lifted it up. I have been going to make an auxiliary table for quite some time but just never got around to it. Well I finally made one. I wanted one that was not very thick to allow for the reverse tooth blades to still work properly. I wanted a nice smooth surface to allow the work piece to slide easily. I also wanted it securely fastened but also convenient to remove. Well I started with a 1/8" piece of hardboard commonly referred to as Masonite . I then attached with contact cement a piece of laminate. The finished size is 16" X 171/4". I drilled and tapped two 1/4-20 attachment holes in my table. The auxiliary table is secured in place by two 1/4-20 flat head machine screws. As it turns out one of the hex wrenches that came with my saw is the exact right size for removing or installing the flat head machine screws.

  12. My wife is gone to a quilting "retreat" this weekend. Not sure what you do at a quilting retreat, but she goes to it each year and I notice she slipped in a few bottles of Mike's Lemonade along with the sewing machine. It is fine by me, Abbey (our standard poodle) and I are having our own little "Scrolling Retreat" right here in my shop. This mornings exercise was a quick "Fidget Spinner". Steve Good pattern. Abbey doesn't have hers done yet, she keeps going outside and goofing off. Right now she is passed out on the shop floor! Anyway this is my first retreat project complete.

What is the breed? Is it a Husky? What a beautiful dog. Pets are such wonderful companions especially dogs. We rescued a small mix breed last year from a hell hole. His mannerisms dictated his name which ended up being Ziggy. He looks like an EWOK.

    choking guide

I personally would not make one of these. What will happen if a kid still chokes on a piece even though it fit into the device? Seems to me that you are doing the governments job and telling them it is not a choking hazard, seems it would open you up for liability that would not have been there if you just said nothing and let common sense rule. not that its a bad idea, just being devils advocate.

    Dust collecting box.

Nothing new or fancy here. A week or so ago I saw here where some one put a small box under their saw to collect dust. Well I thought I would try that and it seems to work pretty good. I used those plastic cable ties to attach it to the back and a piece of metal strapping and a rare earth magnet to hold it in place in the front. To clean it out I pull the box down from the magnet and stick my shop vac hose it there. Having it tied in the back doesn't bother me because so far I haven't needed to tilt my table. If I do need to tilt it I will cut it loose and replace it when I am through.

I think if this happen to me.. I be more worried about damage to my scroll saw motor or circuit board than the vac..If you're plugging this into the same circuit.. I think if I would going to do something like this.. I'd buy a separate foot switch for the vac. and plug it into a separate outlet / circuit. this I would mount a piece of flat metal to each of the peddles of the foot switch.. this way you only stepping on one foot switch but actually turning on two with them linked together.. A foot switch is cheaper than a vac every few months.. JMO Kevin

  41. Most towns of any size have companies that sell reclaimed wood, like bard wood. I have found it to be costly. I buy my lumber from a place that sells lumber mostly to cabinet makers. Most everything is around $2 a board foot plus or minus. I have to buy at least $200 worth or they won't sell to you. I do have to plane it but it's better than going to a big box store. Do a Google search.

    SSV changes

A couple things that are pretty neat about how Travis runs this place are: being responsive to the need to upgrade the forum and getting it done when it needs to be done. being sensitive to the needs of of SSV followers - keeping all of us in the loop from the get-go by advertising the changes, letting us know when they are going to occur, carrying them out in a timely manner, maintaining the look and feel of what we've been used to on SSV (as much as possible), seeking feedback on issues, responding to those issues quickly and ultimately shepherding the entire transition through in a way that made it as quick and pain-free as it might possibly be. He makes it look easy!! ...... (which I am sure it is not!!) .... Pretty hard to ask for anything else!!. Thanks!! Jay

  43. I have a local furniture maker that puts all his off-cuts in a bin outside for people to pic. Over the past year I've collected more wood for me to last at least 10 years.

  44. My nephew has brought me quit a bit of wood over the years, in the form of old headboards from beds, shelving, some cabinets. all things he has found very cheap or free at yard sales. I still have some beautiful mahogany from one bookshelf he brought to me. Also check Habitat for Humanity stores. Not free wood but very cheap.

    Hawk Owners!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave, good decision to be patient. I am also not sure when the Hawks went to the current style with top and bottom feed capability. And much better clamps. I bought my Hawk G4 26 in 2005 and I think it was a new design then. It is a bullet proof saw.

    Dust collecting box.

I made this tray to go under my saw it collects all the sawdust & stops it falling into my lap.You could cut a hole in a corner to sweep the dust down but I found I can sweep it out using a small dust pan & brush. Cheers Peter
