  1. Started in 2015, completed today. I started this got it cut out, did lots of sanding and them put it in a cardboard box and set it on the "Unfinished" shelf. Last week Heppnerguy and his wife came to visit. He brought me a box of nice veneers. Some were Mahogany, just perfect for lining the "Five Dragon Box". Last weekend I glued the box together, today I lined it with the veneer (thanks so much Dick). The box is approximately 17"L x 6"W x 7"T. The pattern came from "finescrollsaw.com" a place of beautiful patterns and great friendly service.

    Second project

Second project cut, just need to stain it. Originally it said support your local farmer underneath , but I screwed up the letters so I just cut them off. Need to practice cutting letters.

  9. Finished product of the Alice In Wonderland Clock. Designed and burned by my wife, cut by me. Wood is 1/2" cherry, about 11" in diameter. She ended up giving it to her mother for mothers day. It was hard to let go.

    Air Plant Holder

Back in January, I made an Air Plant Holder. Last week a customer of ArtCrafters bought the item. Today she sent me a picture showing the holder filled with air plants. Nice to see an item in use.

  11. A project finished this weekend. The pattern is by Sue Mey and purchased from her website. I used 1/2" Ash for the dream catcher and 1/16" Flame Maple and Walnut for the feathers. It is PPROXIMATELY 8" X 20". The blades used were FD Ur #1, #3, and New Spiral #2/0. There was one coat of sanding sealer and two coats of spray Shellac. I like working with Ash. The feathers were stack cut. Comments welcome.

    Dewalt Type 1 repair

Over 3 years ago and as a newbie, my new Sears scroll saw broke. I found a Dewalt 788 Type 1 on Craigslist and was a happy camper for a long time. How much use it had before was unknown. Over time the noise of the saw increased and I read all the threads about 788 repairs here and watch the You-tube videos on the subject a couple of times. Not being a mechanic I admit to being kind of intimidated to tackle doing a rebuild. Since new saws were not in the budget and lately CL has lots of $50.00 Craftsman, a couple of $1000 Hegners, and Dewalts at $500 and up (really?? for a used machine that is going for $490 at Home Depot?). It was time to dive into DIY repairs. I studied the videos until I almost had them memorized. Ordered sleeves from e-replacements and bearings (INA brand) from my local distributor Bearings Inc. They are less then 10 miles for me and were very helpful – great service. The job is done and the saw has quieted WAY down. Just kind of purrs. My observations: Should have done this much sooner! Not that there were any big issues, just that after 15-20 years of life everything was slightly warn. I found nothing nearly as bad as what was shown on the vids. The parts lists that are on other threads here, seem for type 2 machines and there are some differences in part numbers. If you have a Type 1, verify your part numbers. The videos show using the new bearing to push out the old one in one operation. Bearings Inc people told me to do it in two steps. Push out the old one and than install the new. Their reasoning was the the side with the part numbers on the bearings is hardened steel and the opposite side is not. Pushing on that side could deform the bearing and shorten its life. I have know idea if that is true or not. Going forward, I will be doing a disassembly and applying new grease probably every year.So my recommend that if you have a Dewalt that is less than ideal, be braver that I was and go for it. I have a like new saw at a cost of about $150 in parts.

  15. After few months of work, finally done. Our Christmas present last year was a Artesia 150e Digital Piano from Costco. (great deal) Well, I quickly started collecting a library of "Fake Books" to start learning to read music. (getting slowly better) that brought on complaints from my wife to say why are all these books laying around. Solution.. a magazine rack. Tried to find plans I liked on the web but no luck. Came up with my own idea. I used Kreg pocket screws to assemble. After many coats of black lacquer, tried to get it as nice as the piano but couldn't quite get it there. Still has a nice shine. I used a Sue Landry design for the music scroll pattern and many coats of gold paint. Pinned nailed to the sides. Problem solved but my wife still says that if I keep playing by ear, I have to start using larger Q-tips. LOL!

  16. I finished four of these this weekend. The patterns are by Diana Thompson and purchased from her website. I used Eastern White Cedar and Eastern Red Cedar. I found that the Eastern White Cedar was a little too soft. I used FD Polar #5 and #9 blades. This finish was two dips in sanding sealer. I have now made over 200 of these. Comments welcome.

  17. A gal let me salvage a bunch of floor/ceiling tongue and groove boards out of a 100 year old house that is falling down. All she asked for in return was a small Montana Wall Hanging made with some of the boards. Done! It's about 15"x9".

  30. On the EX saw when the lift arm starts to feel a little rough up and down .The adjusting screw has a ball bearing mounted on the tip.I took the screw out and added a little 3 in 1 oil to the bearing, pushed it in and out a couple of times. Now it acts like a new saw

  41. It's the one without all that but with two little ones running around affording a good quality saw is out of the question as the last few larger hegners on Craigslist around here have been selling for darn near a grand. I have an old AMT 23" thought this one might be kinda cool to have as a little more portable model for maybe craft show demo's too.

  42. I bought my 14" for about that also, but it was single speed, didn't have a quick tensioner and such. You should be able to get any part you need for that saw from "Advanced", so parts should not be a problem. You can not upgrade the arms for the upfront quick tensioner, but there is a upgrade to put a quick tension mechanism on the back. I will say, there is a big usability difference between the low end 14" Hegner, and my 22", variable speed multi max with quick tensioner up front. If you could afford it, I would at least look at the 22in, see if it has the features I just mentioned. If you are within driving distance of Manchester TN, I will give you my 14" Hegner for free. ---Randy

    EX tweaking

I have been using a shopvac successfully and quite happily attached. I keep a piece of toothpick in there to keep the plastic from "sticking" to the bottom of the deck. Even re-glued the plastic with duct tape after it came loose. It makes a lot of difference in the amount of sawdust in the air that I see floating in the light of my lamp.

    choking guide

You wouldn't believe the number of parents that will buy a puzzle with choking pieces for their little toddlers. If there is a kid under 3 with them I always remind them that the puzzle has choking pieces. Often they will buy anyway and say "oh he/she doesn't put things in their mouth". But the kicker was the last show. Sold a Sea Life tray puzzle with lots of choking pieces to a couple with a little kid in a stroller. They took the puzzle out of the package and placed in front of the kid to play with. My wife and I couldn't believe it. Often wonder if they still have all the pieces.
